The Cumberland Throw community is deeply saddened by the passing of rugby league legend Ron Lynch, whose remarkable career and enduring legacy have left an indelible mark on the sport. Born in 1939 in the picturesque NSW town of Young, Ron’s journey from country beginnings to rugby league stardom is a testament to his talent, dedication, and leadership on and off the field.
Ron’s rise to prominence in rugby league circles began when he moved to Forbes for work, where he quickly caught selectors’ attention with his exceptional skill and tenacity. His selection for the country team and subsequent NSW jersey marked the beginning of a stellar career that would see him don the green and gold for Australia on 12 occasions.
Affectionately known as “Thirsty,” Ron made his mark at Parramatta in 1961, joining a team that faced significant challenges on the field. Despite the team’s struggles, Ron’s unwavering commitment and exceptional talent earned him recognition at both club and representative levels.
During Parramatta’s finals regularity from 1962 to 1965, Ron emerged as a key figure in one of the most formidable packs in the competition. His leadership on the field and versatility in various positions, including lock, second row, prop, five-eighth, and center, showcased his exceptional talent and dedication to the game.
In 1970, Ron’s leadership qualities were further recognized when he was appointed captain and coach of Parramatta—a testament to his respect and admiration within the club. Though his tenure in a dual role was short-lived, Ron continued to lead by example, guiding Parramatta through triumphs and challenges with grace and determination.
After a distinguished career at Parramatta, Ron transferred to Penrith, where he continued to exemplify the qualities of leadership and sportsmanship that defined his career. Captaining the Panthers in his final two seasons of first grade, Ron’s influence extended beyond the field, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of playing alongside him.
As we remember Ron Lynch, we pay tribute to his legacy as a rugby league icon, whose passion, dedication, and leadership inspired generations of players and fans alike. His impact on the sport will be remembered fondly, and his memory will forever be etched in the annals of rugby league history.
We offer our deepest condolences and sympathies to Ron’s family, friends, and fans during this difficult time.
