A Chanute man riding a bicycle died Wednesday after succumbing to injuries sustained in a collision with a car late Tuesday morning on Santa Fe Avenue. Harvey Morris Love, 67, passed away at the University of Kansas Medical Center one day after the accident, as reported by the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP). According to the KHP, the incident occurred at 11:52 a.m. on Tuesday. Marcus Earl Howard, 39, also of Chanute, was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro southbound on Santa Fe Avenue.
At the same time, Love was riding his bicycle south on the west sidewalk of Santa Fe Avenue. As Howard made a right turn into Santa Fe Park, Love’s bicycle collided with the rear side of the vehicle. Despite the immediate response and subsequent medical attention, Love’s injuries proved fatal, and he passed away the following day. Howard, the driver of the Chevrolet Camaro, was not injured in the incident, according to the KHP report. The accident highlights the importance of vigilance and safety for both drivers and cyclists, especially in areas where sidewalks and roads intersect.
The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Further details may be released as the investigation progresses. Local authorities urge all road users to be aware of their surroundings and exercise caution, particularly when making turns or entering parks and other public spaces where pedestrians and cyclists are likely to be present. The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers on the road and the need for shared responsibility in ensuring everyone’s safety.
