Sportscaster Tom McCarthy works in the field. He broadcasts play-by-play for the Philadelphia Phillies on television and calls Westwood One’s radio coverage of National Football League games. He calls a few CBS college and NFL basketball games. McCarthy used to call the shots for the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Saint Joseph’s University.
McCarthy was the radio play-by-play announcer and post-game radio presenter for the Philadelphia Phillies for five seasons (2001–05). He previously worked six seasons (1994–1999) as the Double-A Trenton Thunder’s play-by-play broadcaster. In addition, he has provided play-by-play commentary for Rutgers University football games as well as national football and basketball broadcasts on the Sports USA Radio Network, the Atlantic 10 TV network, Westwood One, and the CBS Sports Network (previously CSTV).
After working as a play-by-play commentator for the National League East rival New York Mets on WFAN for two seasons (2006–07), McCarthy inked a five-year contract to return to Philadelphia starting in 2008. After Harry Kalas passed away early in the 2009 season, McCarthy assumed full-time responsibility for television play-by-play. McCarthy joins Tim McCarver and Todd Kalas as the only two broadcasters who have regularly covered the Phillies and Mets.
McCarthy covered men’s basketball and football at Princeton University for almost ten years. During the Tigers’ 43–41 upset victory over the reigning NCAA champion UCLA in the 1996 NCAA tournament and their 27–2 run through the 1997–98 season, he provided play-by-play commentary. 2009 saw McCarthy call the play-by-play of the 2009 Caribbean Series for the MLB Network from their Secaucus, New Jersey studios, with color commentary provided by Uri Berenguer, a Boston Red Sox Spanish language radio announcer.
