On Saturday evening, gunfire erupted outside a nightclub in Elberton, Georgia, resulting in the death of an adolescent and the shooting of seven others. Elbert County Emergency Services, the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office, and Elbert County EMS responded to a gunshot near 7 Grand nightclub on Evergreen Drive just before midnight on Oct. 12.
The incident involved multiple individuals being shot. Elberton is situated approximately 100 miles northeast of Atlanta, in close proximity to the South Carolina state boundary.
A video was obtained by 11Alive, which was captured by an individual in a vehicle near the nightclub. The video shows the sound of over 20 shots being discharged, followed by chaos as many individuals attempted to exit the area.
The victims were transported to institutions in the vicinity for medical attention. The eighth victim was an adult, while seven of the victims were between the ages of 15 and 19. On Sunday, Hart County Schools issued a statement that verified the death of one of their pupils in the shooting. Bry’Shun Jordan, a 15-year-old student at Hart Academy, was identified by the school district.
The municipality indicated, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Bry’Shun’s family, friends, and the entire Hart County community during this difficult time.” The Elbert County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) in the investigation of the homicide and the processing of the site.
It is uncertain how many of the six additional adolescents who survived the shooting are also students. Elberton’s Mayor, Daniel Graves, issued a Facebook statement on Monday regarding the fatal gunshot. “The tragic events that transpired on Saturday evening have deeply affected our community.” It is evidence of a reality that we were already aware of, but were unwilling to acknowledge: our community is not immune to the tragic, senseless, and horrific events of our era.
