On Thursday, authorities released the name of the man they said was slain in last week’s police shooting in Hollywood, which also wounded a responding officer. Juan Wu,48, was named by authorities as the man in question. A “neighbour dispute” involving a reported act of vandalism led Hollywood police to a residence near North 66th Terrace and Eaton Street at approximately 9:30 a.m. on October 10th.
After Wu allegedly damaged a common fence, his neighbour reported him to 911. The caller stated, “I’m calling because of a situation with a neighbour here,” in the 911 recording that Local 10 News obtained. Our shared fence was messed up by him (Wu). He began yelling and cursing at my husband as soon as he approached him to have a conversation. The woman sought assistance in order to diffuse the volatile situation.
Wu allegedly jumped up and fought with one of the cops as they were doing their investigation. Reports indicate that the officer made an unsuccessful attempt to employ a Taser.Officer allegedly shot and wounded Wu “fearing for their life,” according to investigations. He was transferred to a nearby medical facility, where he was subsequently declared deceased.
Officer Deanna Bettineschi was treated and released from the hospital after suffering injuries during the confrontation, according to a news release issued Thursday by the Hollywood Police Department. No one knows who the cop is just yet.
Local 10 News spoke with an eyewitness who watched the cop, who looked panicked, do cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Wu while he was face down on the ground. Wu was well-known in the neighbourhood for her issues with mental health, according to the neighbour.
The shooting involving the police officer is under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
