The woman, who was thirty years old and from Vernon Hills, was struck and killed while crossing the street in the 900 block of South Milwaukee Avenue in the village on Friday night, according to the police. The woman has been identified by the authorities. The Lake County Coroner’s Office states that an autopsy that was performed on Emily Wegleiz on Monday determined that she died as a result of blunt-force injuries that she sustained as a consequence of the collision.
At around 10:43 p.m. on Friday, police were dispatched to the area south of Woodlands Parkway in response to a report that a pedestrian had been struck while attempting to cross the northbound lanes of traffic. The Vernon Hills police department reports that officers attempted to save Wegleiz’s life before the arrival of paramedics from the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District; nonetheless, Wegleiz was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after their arrival.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the woman remained at the scene and cooperated with the authorities, according to the police. Witnesses were also questioned. According to the police, there is no suspicion of driver impairment.
There are no pedestrian crossings that are specifically designated at this location on Milwaukee, which is a four-lane lit road. Before it was finally opened again, the road had been closed for a number of hours. Police from Vernon Hills and members of the Major Crash Assistance Team from Lake County are currently conducting an investigation into the collision.
