Matilde Lorenzi, a 19-year-old Italian skier, died after a training accident in northern Italy, leaving the alpine skiing community in sadness.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Matilde Lorenzi,” the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) said in a sympathy statement after confirming her death on Tuesday.
During training on the Schnalstaler glacier in Val Senales on Monday, Lorenzi, a member of the Italian Army’s sports branch and a prospective talent, sustained a serious head injury. She was given first aid right away after falling heavy on the hard piste.
She was evacuated to a Bolzano hospital by first responders. Despite every effort, Lorenzi passed away from her wounds early on Tuesday morning, with medical personnel describing her condition as “very serious.” As soon as she was hurt, she quit training.
Lorenzi, an exceptional athlete with a promising future, just won the national Super-G title in March, making her a rising star in Italian skiing. She passed just a few weeks before November 15, which would have been her 20th birthday.
FIS unites her family, teammates, coaches, and the larger Italian skiing community in commemorating Lorenzi’s life and accomplishments, along with FISI President Flavio Roda. The skiing community laments the loss of a gifted young skier who was taken far too soon, and everyone who knew her will miss her commitment, energy, and talent very much.
