Born on May 15, 1961, in Dunnville, Ontario, Marie grew up with a strong sense of community and service. She graduated from the University of Guelph with a degree in Political Science, where her passion for public service blossomed. After returning to Haldimand County, Marie quickly became involved in local politics, driven by her desire to make a difference in her community.
Marie served as a councillor for several years before being elected mayor in 2014. Her tenure was marked by a commitment to improving infrastructure, enhancing community services, and promoting sustainable development. Under her leadership, Haldimand County saw significant advancements in recreational facilities, public transportation, and environmental initiatives.
Known for her approachable demeanor and unwavering dedication, Marie was beloved by constituents from all walks of life. She had an exceptional ability to listen and connect with people, often attending community events and engaging in open dialogues. “Marie was not just our mayor; she was our friend,” said a longtime resident. “She genuinely cared about the people of Haldimand County and worked tirelessly for our community.”
Beyond her political career, Marie was an avid advocate for education and youth programs. She volunteered with local organizations to promote mentorship and leadership opportunities for young people. Her legacy includes the establishment of several scholarship programs aimed at supporting students in their pursuit of higher education.
On that fateful day, Marie was returning home from a community event when her vehicle was involved in a tragic accident. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The news sent shockwaves through Haldimand County, and flags were flown at half-mast in her honor.
Marie’s family and friends are devastated by her sudden passing. She is survived by her husband, James Trainer, and their two children, Emily and Daniel, who were her pride and joy. “She was the heart of our family,” her husband said. “Marie was a loving wife, an amazing mother, and a true friend to many. Her spirit will live on in the countless lives she touched.”
A memorial service will be held on November 6, 2023, at the Haldimand County Community Centre, where friends, family, and community members are invited to celebrate Marie’s life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Haldimand Community Fund, an organization that reflects Marie’s commitment to community development.
As Haldimand County mourns the loss of a dedicated leader and friend, Marie Trainer’s impact will be remembered for years to come. Her vision for a better community, along with her kindness and compassion, will inspire future generations.
Rest in peace, Marie. You will be missed but never forgotten.
