Elijah W. Hummel Death, Obituary – A tragic motorcycle crash in Groton claimed the life of 21-year-old Elijah W. Hummel early Friday morning, authorities have confirmed. The incident occurred around 12:45 a.m. on Fort Hill Road (Route 1), in the vicinity of Depot Road and South Road. According to the Groton Police Department, an officer on patrol discovered the crash site and immediately reported the downed motorcycle and the severely injured rider.
Hummel, a Groton resident, was found a short distance from his 2024 Kawasaki ZX-400 motorcycle, which had crashed after he reportedly lost control while traveling westbound. Investigators believe Hummel was speeding at the time of the accident. His bike crossed into the opposite lane before striking a parked Jeep Cherokee in front of Midway Pizza. The force of the collision left the young man with fatal injuries.
Emergency responders, including the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department, Groton Ambulance, and Lawrence & Memorial Paramedics, rushed to the scene. Hummel was quickly transported to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, but despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Police expressed their condolences to Hummel’s family and emphasized the tragic nature of the accident. “Hummel’s family was notified of his death, and we extend our heartfelt condolences,” the department stated. The roadway was temporarily closed for investigation but has since reopened.
