Branda passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loved ones, after a courageous battle with cancer. Her unwavering strength, resilience, and grace in the face of her illness were just a few of the many qualities that defined her life.
Born on June 15, 1968, in Des Moines, Branda was the daughter of Robert and Eleanor Thompson. From a young age, she was known for her infectious spirit, curiosity, and compassion. Branda had an innate ability to make everyone around her feel special, and she carried this quality with her throughout her life. Whether as a child, a friend, or an adult, she always sought to make meaningful connections with those around her. Her kindness and caring nature made her a beloved figure in her family and community.
Branda graduated from Des Moines Central High School in 1986, where she excelled academically and was known for her dedication and enthusiasm for learning. She pursued a degree in Business Administration at the University of Iowa and was proud of her accomplishments. Branda’s determination, curiosity, and passion for helping others led her to a fulfilling career in human resources. Her professional life was marked by her tireless work ethic, a commitment to excellence, and a deep sense of responsibility to those she served.
In her career at the Iowa Health System, Branda quickly became recognized for her leadership and innovation. However, Branda’s true joy was found in her family. She married Michael Johnson, the love of her life, in 1992, and together they shared 32 years of love, laughter, and unwavering partnership. Their bond was an inspiration to all who knew them, and they were often seen as a model of love and devotion.
Branda was also a devoted mother to her two children, Sarah and Noah. Her children were the light of her life, and she took immense pride in watching them grow and develop into compassionate and caring individuals. She often said that being a mother was her greatest accomplishment, and she made it her mission to nurture and support her children in every way possible. Branda’s love for her family was unconditional, and she created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and love.

A memorial service to celebrate Branda’s life will be held on December 6, 2024, at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines, with visitation starting at 9:30 AM. Friends, family, and community members are invited to attend and share in remembering the incredible life of this remarkable woman. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in Branda’s honor, as this was an organization she felt deeply passionate about.
