Gary Shaw Obituary, Death; – Aston Villa icon Gary Shaw passed away after being discovered collapsed on a Birmingham street following a night out with friends, as revealed during an inquest. The former football star was found unconscious outside his residence in Edgbaston.
Emergency services were notified after a neighbor spotted the 63-year-old lying on the pavement, having sustained a head injury, in the early hours of Friday, September 6, this year. Mr. Shaw, who achieved success with Villa by winning the old First Division and the European Cup, was transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital but unfortunately never regained consciousness, passing away on September 16.
As the inquest concluded today, Thursday, December 5, senior coroner Louise Hunt delivered a verdict of accidental death, attributing the cause to a severe head injury resulting from a fall. The inquest revealed that the footballer had been enjoying drinks at the Jam House in the Jewellery Quarter prior to the incident.
A statement from a family member indicated: “He had been out for the evening at the Jam House club. He consumed a certain amount of alcohol. However, sometime after exiting the taxi, he fell and struck his head on the curb, rendering him unconscious.”
Mrs. Hunt remarked during the brief hearing: “Mr. Shaw had been out socializing with friends on September 5, 2024. In the early hours of September 6, he returned home in a taxi.
“He was found collapsed on the pavement by a neighbor outside his residence at 1:20 a.m., having fallen and hit his head. He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where it was determined that he had sustained a severe head injury due to the fall, which ultimately led to his death on September 16.
“I am satisfied that I should record a conclusion of accident.” She extended her condolences to “all his family and friends.”
