Dr. Mark Shaffrey, an eminent neurosurgeon and dedicated educator, passed away on November 4, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in medical education and patient care. As chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Virginia, Dr. Shaffrey’s contributions shaped modern neurosurgical practices and research.
Dr. Shaffrey’s illustrious career began at Virginia Tech, where he graduated magna cum laude before earning his medical degree at UVA. During his time at the University, he displayed academic brilliance and leadership, earning induction into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. His postgraduate training included a neurosurgical residency at UVA and advanced fellowships in clinical neuropathology, microvascular physiology, and skull base surgery in Slovenia.
Throughout his career, Dr. Shaffrey combined clinical excellence with a dedication to innovation. His tenure as chief of neurosurgery at Keesler USAF Medical Center earned him the Meritorious Service Medal, reflecting his outstanding service and skill. Upon returning to UVA, he founded the Neuro-Oncology Center, further solidifying his commitment to advancing treatments for complex neurological conditions.
