The Orangeburg County community is grappling with the aftermath of a shooting that occurred last weekend at the South Carolina Motorplex. A beloved mechanic and drag racer, 40-year-old Reggie Dantzler, was killed in the incident, which also left two others injured.
Chief Deputy Chandra Gibbs of the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office described the event as a festive birthday celebration that took a tragic turn. “This was meant to be a time of joy within the racing community,” she said. “Unfortunately, an altercation escalated, leading to three people being shot.”
Deputies responded to the scene at approximately 6 p.m. Saturday following reports of gunfire. Dantzler was pronounced dead at the scene, while two other victims, including a minor, are expected to recover. “They are recuperating as well as can be expected after such a traumatic experience,” Gibbs added.
The sheriff’s office is appealing to attendees for assistance in solving the case. Videos, eyewitness accounts, and even the smallest details are being sought to piece together what transpired. “We encourage anyone with information to come forward,” emphasized Gibbs.
