A devastating accident on U.S. 131 in Bear Creek Township claimed the life of Thomas Ned Grutsch, a 69-year-old East Jordan resident, on Tuesday morning. The accident, caused by slippery and icy road conditions, highlights the dangers of Michigan winters and leaves a community grieving the loss of a beloved figure.
Investigators from the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Grutsch’s 2007 Chevrolet Silverado lost traction on the snow-covered road, sliding into the northbound lane and colliding with a semi-truck.
Despite the driver of the semi-truck’s efforts, the impact proved fatal for Grutsch, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A third vehicle, a 2021 Chevrolet Express van, became involved as its driver tried to avoid the collision. Fortunately, no injuries were reported for the other drivers.
“We believe it was just the road conditions, and that was the cause of the accident,” said Undersheriff Matt Leirstein, emphasizing the role of weather in the tragedy.
Grutsch’s obituary paints a picture of a caring and devoted individual who touched the lives of many. His funeral service is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 13, at Gaylord E-Free Church, where loved ones and community members will gather to honor his memory. Visitation begins at 10 a.m., followed by a service officiated by Pastor Scott Distler at noon.
