Dorothy I. Desbiens, an 86-year-old resident of Middle Smithfield Township, tragically lost her life in a multi-vehicle crash on Thursday evening, December 5, 2024. Authorities report that the collision occurred on Route 209, when Desbiens’ car veered off the road, crossed into oncoming traffic, and collided with several other vehicles.
The incident took place around 6:15 p.m. on the busy highway. Witnesses say that Desbiens’ vehicle appeared to lose control after crossing the centerline, ultimately resulting in a chain-reaction crash involving at least three other cars. Emergency responders arrived on the scene shortly after, and despite their efforts to save her, Desbiens was declared dead at the scene.
State police are currently investigating the cause of the crash, though early reports suggest that poor road conditions due to inclement weather might have played a role. No other serious injuries were reported, but a few of the other drivers involved in the crash were treated for minor injuries at the scene.
Desbiens, a longtime resident of Middle Smithfield Township, was well-known for her kindness and dedication to her family. She had a deep love for nature and spent much of her free time volunteering at local parks and nature reserves. Friends and family describe her as a loving mother, grandmother, and friend who always put others before herself.
“She had a heart of gold,” said a close family member. “She was always there for you, whether you needed a friend to talk to or help with something. She loved her family more than anything and will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her.”
Dorothy I. Desbiens is survived by her two children, grandchildren, and many dear friends who will forever remember her generosity and caring spirit.
Her family asks that donations in her memory be made to local environmental charities, a cause she was passionate about.
The Middle Smithfield community is mourning the loss of this beloved woman, and local authorities continue to investigate the crash to determine the exact circumstances that led to this tragic accident.
