Yakov Friedman Obituary, Death; – Connecticut State Police have reported that a man from Monsey was the victim of a deadly small plane crash on I-684, situated at the boundary between Harrison and Greenwich, Connecticut. The victim has been identified as 32-year-old Yakov Friedman, a resident of Monsey and an employee at Fireside Kosher restaurant.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Friedman was flying with pilot Kalmen Goldberger, 26, from Linden, New Jersey, in a single-engine Tecnam P-2008 aircraft, en route to Westchester County Airport. It was during this flight that Goldberger reportedly detected engine issues.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which is overseeing the investigation, released a statement on Thursday evening indicating that preliminary findings suggest Goldberger reported an engine failure while attempting to land at Westchester County Airport. Unfortunately, the engine failed completely, leading to the aircraft crashing on the Greenwich section of I-684 at approximately 6:35 p.m. Governor Kathy Hochul noted that the incident also resulted in a gas spill.
A preliminary report from the NTSB, expected within 30 days, will provide insights from the initial phase of the investigation. The NTSB clarified that during the on-scene investigation, it does not determine or speculate on the cause of the crash. A final report, which will include the probable cause and any contributing factors, is anticipated within 12 to 24 months.
The NTSB’s investigations focus on three main areas: the pilot, the aircraft, and the operating environment. As part of this comprehensive process, investigators will collect various types of information and records, including:
– Flight track data
– Recordings of air traffic control communications
– Aircraft maintenance records
– Weather forecasts and actual conditions at the time of the accident
– The pilot’s license, ratings, and recent flight experience
– A 72-hour background check of the pilot to identify any issues that may have impacted their ability to operate the flight safely
– Witness statements
– Electronic devices data
