Dr. James S. Eakins, a devoted family man, esteemed trauma surgeon, and passionate sports enthusiast, passed away unexpectedly on December 27, 2024, in Camden, NJ. At the age of 56, James’s legacy is one of dedication, compassion, and love for both his family and his profession.
His untimely departure leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew him. Born in Philadelphia, PA, James’s life was a testament to his unwavering commitment to healing others, teaching the next generation of doctors, and nurturing the bonds of family and friendship.
James’s love for his family was immeasurable. He is survived by his beloved wife of 19 years, Micheline (née Mezalis), and their cherished daughter, Audrey.
His parents, James and Pat Eakins, along with his brothers Sam (Jen) and Steve (Tricia), and his nieces and nephews, Katie, Mary, and Jimmy, will forever remember him as a man whose love and loyalty knew no bounds.
His in-laws, Ron and Donna Lischak, and his extended family, including numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, hold him in the highest regard, cherishing the special relationship they shared. James’s life was one filled with affection for all who were close to him, and his home was always a place of warmth and hospitality.
Dr. Eakins’s professional life was equally remarkable. Over the course of more than three decades, he made an indelible impact on the field of trauma surgery. His career began with academic excellence, graduating from Johns Hopkins University before earning his medical degree from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia in 1991.
His thirst for knowledge led him to complete a General Surgery residency at Episcopal Hospital in Philadelphia and a fellowship in Trauma and Critical Care at Cooper Hospital in Camden, NJ. It was at Cooper that Dr. Eakins made his mark as a Trauma Attending Surgeon, where he served with exceptional dedication for nearly a decade.
His commitment to patient care and medical education extended well beyond his years at Cooper. Dr. Eakins returned to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he served as Trauma Medical Director and Director of Surgical Critical Care, continuing to refine his expertise while shaping the next generation of surgeons.
