Rob Blaylock; Obituary, Death: It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Edward Blaylock, lovingly known as Bob, who went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 1st, 2024, at the age of 89. Bob’s life was one of dedication to his family, his passions, and his community. His journey, filled with accomplishments, kindness, and a love for others, will never be forgotten.
Born on June 28th, 1935, in Chattanooga, Oklahoma, to Cecil and Fannie Blaylock, Bob grew up with a sense of hard work and determination that would serve him throughout his life. He was the pride of his parents, an energetic and driven young man who quickly became known for his athletic ability and leadership qualities. Bob’s love for sports, particularly baseball and basketball, began early and shaped much of his character.
Bob was a 1953 graduate of Muldrow High School, where he excelled in both baseball and basketball. His athletic talents were not only a source of pride for him, but they also earned him recognition and accolades that would continue throughout his life. After high school, Bob’s athletic career took a major step forward when he signed to play baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals organization, an achievement he held dear for the rest of his life.
His love for baseball was evident in everything he did, and it remained a passion that stayed with him, both on the field and off. In addition to his baseball career, Bob’s dedication to basketball was also noteworthy. In 2012, he was inducted into the University of Arkansas – Ft. Smith Hall of Fame in recognition of his basketball achievements. A few years later, in 2014, Bob was the first inductee into the Muldrow High School Hall of Fame.
His accomplishments in both sports were a testament to his natural talent, his discipline, and his unrelenting pursuit of excellence. Throughout his life, Bob remained a proud ambassador of athletics, passing on his knowledge and love for sports to the next generations. Bob’s life was not only marked by his athletic accomplishments but also by his commitment to his family.
On October 3rd, 1956, he married the love of his life, Barbara Thompson. Together, they raised three children: Robyn, Russ, and Terri. Their marriage was one built on love, faith, and mutual respect. Barbara and Bob shared a life together full of memories, experiences, and dreams, and her passing before him left a deep hole in his heart. After his baseball career, Bob transitioned into the business world, where he managed the Saratoga Hotel and later owned the Saratoga Restaurant in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
He worked tirelessly to provide for his family and ensure they had the best life possible. His leadership and work ethic extended beyond the workplace, as he poured his heart and soul into raising his children and supporting his wife through all of life’s challenges. In 1997, Bob retired from his restaurant business and purchased a farm in Talala, Oklahoma. There, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of raising racehorses and cattle.
He found peace and joy in working the land, caring for his animals, and embracing the simple pleasures of country life. Bob had a great love for all kinds of animals—potbelly pigs, cats, dogs, and birds. His Martin houses were an ongoing source of fascination for him, and he kept a watchful eye over them, even using his shotgun to protect the nests from starlings. This deep connection to the animals and nature showcased Bob’s nurturing spirit and his respect for all living creatures.
Bob’s love for his family extended beyond his children. As a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he cherished his role in his family’s lives. He was a devoted Papa to 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, each of whom he loved dearly. His guidance, humor, and wisdom will continue to shape their lives for many years to come. Bob’s family was his greatest joy, and his influence on their lives will never be forgotten.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 6th, 2024, at First Baptist Church in Owasso, Oklahoma. The visitation will take place on Thursday, September 5th, 2024, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Greenhill Funeral Home. These events will provide an opportunity for family, friends, and loved ones to gather and honor the remarkable life of Robert Edward Blaylock.
Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara; his parents, Cecil and Fannie Blaylock; his brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Wanda Blaylock; and his infant sister, Glenna Fay Blaylock. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Lois Jo Flanagan and OC Flanagan. His memory will live on in the hearts of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many others whose lives he touched along the way.
As a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Bob’s legacy will be carried on by those who loved him. His ability to inspire, teach, and care for others created lasting memories that will never fade. Whether through his guidance on the basketball court or baseball diamond, his wisdom shared around the dinner table, or the love he gave freely to his family, Bob’s legacy of love, service, and dedication will continue to be felt for generations.
As part of his final tribute, Bob’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers: John Einhellig, Tyler Lambert, Justin Beal, Josh Beal, Luke Blaylock, and Jake Blaylock.
