It is with a heavy heart that I share the deeply saddening news of the passing of my dear friend, Ian Wease. Ian, who touched so many lives with his warmth, kindness, and incredible talent, passed away today, leaving a profound loss in the hearts of all who knew him.
Ian was no stranger to many of us. For over 25 years, he and his family became a treasured part of our extended family, visiting us year after year, creating memories that will remain in our hearts forever. Through the years, Ian became more than just a guest—he was a friend who brought joy, laughter, and countless cherished moments to everyone around him. His presence at our hotel and the conversations we shared will never be forgotten. From the music he loved to sing to the memories he helped create, Ian’s spirit will always live on in the stories we tell and the songs we play in his honor.
His life was a remarkable journey, one that left a lasting impact on the people he encountered along the way. Ian’s distinct Scottish accent, his genuine kindness, and his sense of humor made him a beloved figure. Whether it was at the hotel or with friends, he had a way of making everyone feel comfortable and appreciated. Ian was someone who could turn a simple moment into a treasured memory, and his laugh and infectious smile will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Ian’s journey began in his native Eyemouth, Scotland, where his love for music would become a defining part of his life. As a talented drummer, Ian performed in clubs across the North East and even traveled far and wide, entertaining audiences on cruise ships. Music was always at the heart of who Ian was, and his ability to connect with people through his craft was one of the many reasons he became such a cherished figure in the music community.
But for those of us who knew Ian in more recent years, his connection to Newcastle United was what truly brought us together. Ian worked as a steward for the club, first joining Newcastle United at least back in 1996 and continuing in the role for many years. His dedication to the club was clear, and he spent countless hours providing support, guidance, and a friendly face to players and staff alike.
Ian was more than just a steward; he was an integral part of the Newcastle United family. He worked at the training ground in Chester-le-Street and continued in the role at the current training ground until just a few years ago when he finally retired after over 25 years of service. Ian’s commitment to the club, as well as his wealth of knowledge and helpful nature, made him a valued member of the team. His contributions to Newcastle United, both on and off the field, will always be remembered by the people he worked with and the fans who knew him.
Ian’s kindness extended far beyond his work at Newcastle United and in music. He was a man who genuinely cared for others, always willing to offer help, advice, or simply a listening ear. His generosity of spirit and willingness to go above and beyond for his friends and family made him stand out as a remarkable person. Ian had a knack for making people feel at ease, and his soft-spoken, friendly demeanor was something that everyone appreciated.
Those who worked alongside Ian knew him as a man of great humor and infectious positivity. He was someone who brought light into any room he entered, and his unique way of brightening others’ days made him beloved by all who knew him. Even during challenging times, Ian’s ability to stay positive and maintain a sense of humor was something that all of us admired. He truly had a gift for making others feel valued and important, and his warmth will never be forgotten.
Sadly, Ian’s final years were marked by a battle with cancer. He was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus and liver, and despite his strong will and determination, Ian’s health began to decline. In recent weeks, Ian returned home to receive palliative care and support from his loved ones, where he passed away peacefully today, surrounded by those who cared for him.
As we remember Ian, it’s important to celebrate not just his professional achievements but also the personal qualities that made him so special. His kindness, his generosity, and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life will remain his greatest legacy. Ian was more than just a musician, a steward, or a guest; he was a friend, a confidant, and a true inspiration to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Tonight, as I sit here and raise a glass of whisky in honor of Ian, I am reminded of the many moments we shared, the conversations we had, and the music that will forever be associated with his memory. Ian was known for his love of whisky, and as I raise this glass, I do so in gratitude for the time we had together and the many memories he leaves behind.
Ian, you will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing you. Your music, your kindness, your humor, and your unwavering spirit will never be forgotten. While we mourn your passing, we also celebrate the incredible life you lived and the impact you had on so many. Your memory will live on in the stories we share, the songs we play, and the love we continue to carry for you.
Rest in peace, my dear friend. You will always be remembered with love and affection.
