A senseless and devastating act of violence has shaken the small community of Etowah County, Alabama, after a Georgia couple was fatally shot while visiting a residence in the area. The victims, 68-year-old Darla McKenzie and 72-year-old Michael McKenzie, were killed in a brutal and tragic incident that has left their family and friends reeling in shock and grief.
According to authorities, the shooting occurred on Tuesday at a residence on Coats Bend Circle, where the McKenzies were visiting their daughter and son-in-law, Christopher Scott Johnson. Johnson, 38, has been charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of his in-laws.
Etowah County Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday and discovered both victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but Michael McKenzie was pronounced dead at the residence. Darla McKenzie was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where she succumbed to her injuries a short time later.
Based on information from 911 calls and evidence gathered at the scene, investigators quickly identified Johnson as the primary suspect. He was taken into custody with assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Ashville, Steele, Glencoe, and Rainbow City police departments.
The investigation has revealed that Johnson was married to the McKenzies’ daughter, who was present at the home at the time of the shooting and made the 911 call. The motive behind the shooting is still unclear, and authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
Etowah County Sheriff Jonathon Horton has extended his deepest sympathy to the McKenzie family and friends, saying, “This is an incredibly difficult time for the McKenzie family, and our hearts go out to them.
