The Selkirk Fire Department, along with the entire Selkirk community, is mourning the loss of John A. Telfer, affectionately known as “JT,” a dedicated firefighter whose contributions to his community spanned over four decades. JT, as he was known to his colleagues and loved ones, passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership, and compassion that will never be forgotten.
John’s journey with the Selkirk Fire Department began in 1975 when he joined as a young firefighter eager to serve and make a difference in his community. Over the years, his dedication and commitment to his fellow firefighters and the residents of Selkirk grew stronger, solidifying his role as one of the department’s most respected and cherished members.
In 2017, John retired from active duty, transitioning into the role of Veteran Member. Despite stepping away from his daily duties, his connection to the department remained unwavering. He continued to serve as a vital figure within the fire company, always offering his wisdom, mentorship, and support to newer members.
From 2001 to 2010, John served as Assistant Chief at Selkirk Fire Company 3, a role that allowed him to shape the future of the department. His leadership during this period was instrumental in ensuring that the department operated smoothly, prioritizing safety while fostering a collaborative and supportive environment for his fellow firefighters.
John’s contributions went far beyond his official title. As a Safety Officer, he was dedicated to the well-being of his fellow firefighters, ensuring that safety protocols were followed and that each firefighter had the proper training to minimize risks on the job. His foresight and attention to detail helped create a safer working environment for all, and his approach to safety became a model for others in the department.
Even after his official retirement from the active fire service, John remained committed to the department. From 2011 onward, he served in multiple administrative capacities, including Membership Secretary, Recording Secretary, and a member of the Board of Directors. In these roles, John ensured that the department’s records were meticulously kept and that the strategic direction of the department was sound. His work behind the scenes allowed the fire company to focus on its core mission of protecting the community.
John’s service extended beyond his role at the fire department. His warm personality, sense of humor, and genuine kindness made him a beloved figure in the community. Whether he was providing encouragement to new recruits or organizing local events, John was always there to lend a hand. His ability to connect with people, his mentoring nature, and his generosity made him a role model and a trusted friend to many.
One of the most significant aspects of John’s legacy is his unwavering dedication to his community. In addition to his work with the fire department, John was involved in various community initiatives. He volunteered his time to help with local fundraisers, community service projects, and other charitable causes. His altruistic spirit and willingness to help others were evident in everything he did, and his actions left a lasting impact on the Selkirk area.
Sadly, in 2018, John faced the heartbreaking loss of his beloved wife, Carol, after more than 31 years of marriage. Carol was the love of John’s life, and her passing was a profound blow to him. The bond they shared was a beautiful testament to the strength of love and devotion, and it is comforting to know that John is now reunited with Carol. Their enduring love serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of family, support, and togetherness.
John’s passing has left a significant void in the hearts of his family, friends, and colleagues. The Selkirk Fire Department has expressed its deep sorrow, remembering John as “an incredible community servant” and “one of the nicest people you could ever meet.” These words resonate deeply with those who had the honor of working alongside John and benefiting from his leadership, mentorship, and kindness. His presence will be missed, but his memory will continue to inspire those who knew him.
In response to John’s passing, plans are underway to honor his legacy. Memorial services are being organized, and discussions are in progress to establish a scholarship fund in his name. This fund will support young individuals pursuing careers in public service, ensuring that John’s spirit of service and commitment to others continues to guide future generations. These initiatives are just a few of the many ways in which John’s influence will continue to be felt within the Selkirk Fire Department and the broader community.
The community’s response to John’s death has been one of unity and support. Neighbors, friends, and colleagues have come together to share stories, offer condolences, and extend a helping hand to John’s family during this incredibly difficult time.
