His passing marks the end of an era for a business that has been an iconic part of the community since its founding in 1944. Under Frank’s leadership,
Frank’s journey in baking began at a young age, learning from his father, who founded the family business. In a past interview with 9 News, Frank recalled, “The first lesson my father taught me was the importance of quality in baking.” That early lesson would shape his entire career and the lasting success of Goldstein’s Bakery. Frank took over the business in 1962 after his father’s passing, a pivotal moment that allowed him to put his stamp on the bakery. Alongside his brother John, he made the bold decision to rebrand Continental Cakes as Goldstein Bakery, setting the foundation for the future success that followed.
In 1968, Frank’s vision and determination led to the opening of the second Goldstein store in Southport. Despite concerns about high rent at the time, Frank’s leadership and focus on quality ensured the new location thrived. His ability to take calculated risks while maintaining the integrity of the brand was one of the many qualities that endeared him to both his employees and customers. Over the years, the family-operated bakery expanded to multiple locations along the coast, becoming a staple of the Gold Coast community.
Goldstein’s Bakery became more than just a business; it was a beloved institution, known for its delicious pies, cakes, and pastries that kept generations of locals and tourists coming back for more. The bakery’s pies, twice named the best in Australia, were a true testament to Frank’s unwavering commitment to excellence. Even as the business grew, Frank never compromised on the values of quality and service that his father instilled in him. He remained dedicated to ensuring every pie, every pastry, and every loaf of bread met the highest standards.
Although Frank had stepped back from the daily operations of the bakery in recent years, his influence remained strong. His presence was felt in every aspect of the business, from the recipes to the relationships built with loyal customers and employees. “Frank will be remembered by his character, he loved everybody,” said longtime employee Trisha Griffiths. His warm personality and genuine care for others were as much a part of Goldstein’s Bakery as the pies themselves.
Beyond his business acumen, Frank was deeply committed to his community. He was a dedicated leader who supported numerous local causes and organizations. One of his most significant contributions was his role as chairman of the Gold Coast Hebrew Congregation, where he served as a pillar of the community, guiding and supporting others with the same compassion and dedication he brought to his business. Frank’s commitment to his community, faith, and family left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Frank Goldstein’s impact extended far beyond the walls of his bakery. His legacy is one of hard work, family values, and a deep love for his community. The pies he perfected were just one part of the story. It was his commitment to creating a welcoming, family-run business and his dedication to making the Gold Coast a better place that truly set him apart.
As the Gold Coast mourns the loss of a true local legend, Frank’s memory will live on through the bakery he built, the lives he touched, and the generations of families who will continue to enjoy the fruits of his labor. His legacy is baked into the very fabric of the community, and he will be deeply missed.
Rest in peace, Frank Goldstein. Your legacy and spirit will forever remain a cherished part of the Gold Coast.
