It is with deep sorrow that we share the sudden passing of Robert Alan Yaffe, a beloved figure in the Providence, Rhode Island community, who passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at Miriam Hospital after a brief illness. Robert was surrounded by his family and loved ones during his final moments, a reflection of the deep connections he fostered throughout his life. At the age of 70, Robert’s passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, colleagues, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched through his entrepreneurial endeavors and community-focused spirit.
Born in Miami, Florida, Robert was the son of the late Bertram and Erna (Jaffe) Yaffe. His early years were spent in the surrounding areas of Fall River and Dartmouth, Massachusetts, where he developed a strong sense of community and a deep appreciation for healthy living and the importance of nutrition. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth in 1977, Robert embarked on a path that would not only shape his own life but would also positively impact the lives of many others in the years to come. Robert’s career was marked by his entrepreneurial spirit, his dedication to the well-being of his community, and his unwavering passion for good food and sustainable practices.
Robert’s journey as a local entrepreneur began with his commitment to healthy eating and his desire to create spaces where people could come together to share nourishing meals. In 1996, he opened the Garden Grille restaurant in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, a local establishment that quickly became a favorite among the community for its fresh, healthy, and delicious offerings. The success of Garden Grille was a testament to Robert’s vision and his belief that food could not only nourish the body but also strengthen the bonds of the community. His commitment to providing wholesome and thoughtful food experiences earned him the admiration and loyalty of many customers over the years.
Following the success of the Garden Grille, Robert expanded his business portfolio and opened the Wildflour Cafe and Bakery in 2010. This addition, located in Pawtucket, became a beloved local gem, known for its organic and locally sourced ingredients, and the warm, inviting atmosphere that Robert cultivated. The cafe quickly gained a reputation for its commitment to quality and for being a place where friends and family could gather, share meals, and enjoy each other’s company in a welcoming environment. As a restaurateur, Robert’s focus was always on community, creativity, and sustainability, which became the pillars of his work.
In 2013, Robert expanded his culinary ventures once again with the opening of The Grange restaurant in Providence. Known for its innovative menu and dedication to farm-to-table practices, The Grange quickly became a sought-after destination for those seeking flavorful, locally sourced meals. As with his previous endeavors, Robert’s vision for The Grange was rooted in his belief that food could be a vehicle for change, bringing people together and supporting local farmers and artisans in the process.
But Robert’s impact didn’t stop with his restaurants. His dedication to healthy living and his deep commitment to supporting the community went beyond his work as a restaurateur. Before opening his celebrated establishments, Robert operated The Golden Sheaf, his family’s natural foods market in Providence, where he instilled his values of sustainability, community, and healthy living into every aspect of the business. Robert’s ability to build community around food and his unwavering belief in the power of shared meals brought together people from all walks of life and helped to foster a sense of belonging.
Throughout his life, Robert was not only a successful businessman but also a creative soul who sought to make a positive impact in everything he did. His other passions included writing and playing one of his many guitars, which he used as an outlet for his creativity and a way to express himself. Whether he was strumming a chord on his guitar or putting pen to paper, Robert’s creative spirit was evident in every aspect of his life. His artistry and his love for music were just a few of the ways he connected with others, offering a sense of joy and inspiration to all who knew him.
Robert’s legacy lives on through the relationships he built, the businesses he created, and the countless lives he touched. He was a devoted father to his daughter Alyson Yaffe, who, along with her husband Jesse Kalb, and their children Bleecker and Declan Kalb, carry on Robert’s values and principles. Robert is also survived by Uschi Yaffe of Munich, Germany, who shared a meaningful chapter of his life, as well as his sister Cheryl Kiser and her husband David of Weston, MA, his brother Eric Yaffe of Cranston, RI, nephew Ross Kiser of Denver, CO, niece Kenna Kiser of Boston, MA, and his beloved dog Fred. Each of these family members will continue to honor Robert’s memory and carry forward his legacy of love, compassion, and dedication.
As the family, friends, and community mourn the loss of Robert, they also celebrate the life he lived—a life filled with purpose, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. His entrepreneurial spirit, his love for healthy living, and his dedication to his community will continue to inspire future generations. In honor of Robert’s memory, a private memorial service will be held for his family, with a celebration of life scheduled for a later date, allowing the many individuals who knew and loved Robert to come together to honor his remarkable life.
