Terrified pupils at Knox Academy in Haddington, East Lothian, were locked in their classrooms on Friday morning, February 21, after a teenager was seen with a BB gun on school grounds.
Parents of the students received an email from the school’s senior management team at 10:15 a.m., informing them of the situation. The email, obtained by Edinburgh Evening News, stated: “The school is in lockdown. Please do not be too concerned. We will be in touch as soon as possible with an update.”
The limited information left many families anxious. A grandmother of two pupils expressed her concern: “We heard reports that police were standing outside the school, so my daughter went up there. We heard that kids were locked in classrooms, but no one is saying anything else right now.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed that officers were called to the secondary school shortly before 10 a.m. following reports of a teenager in possession of what was believed to be a BB gun.
“Around 9:55 a.m. on Friday, February 21, police were called to a secondary school in Haddington following a report of a youth in possession of what was believed to be a BB gun in the grounds of the school. A 16-year-old youth has been arrested, and inquiries are continuing. There is no ongoing threat to the school nor the public,” the spokesperson stated.
