Harry Critchley Halifax, Nova Scotia Death- The sudden passing of Harry Critchley has left a deep void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the communities he touched. A bright and compassionate individual, Harry’s life was marked by his unwavering commitment to justice, education, and advocacy. His loss is felt profoundly by those who knew him, and his legacy will continue to inspire countless others.
Harry was a proud member of the 2022 graduating class at Dalhousie University’s Schulich School of Law. Before pursuing his legal studies, he spent five years as an educator and researcher, most recently at the Access to Justice and Law Reform Institute of Nova Scotia. It was during this time that he became deeply familiar with the Weldon Tradition—a philosophy of unselfish public service that resonated with his own values. This connection ultimately led him to choose Schulich Law for his legal education, where he thrived as a student and advocate.
Beyond his academic achievements, Harry was deeply involved in community work. He served as co-chair of East Coast Prison Justice alongside Professor Sheila Wildeman, an organization dedicated to advocating for criminalized individuals in Nova Scotia. His passion for justice extended to his roles as a board member for the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia and the Halifax Board of Police Commissioners. Through these roles, Harry demonstrated a tireless commitment to creating a fairer and more equitable society.
Harry’s journey was one of continuous growth and service. After graduating from Schulich Law, he planned to article at Nova Scotia Legal Aid in Dartmouth, where he would work in their criminal office. Before beginning this next chapter, he took a well-deserved break, spending time in the South of France. There, he worked on a farm, practiced his French, and even took up beekeeping—a challenge he embraced with his characteristic humor and determination.
Harry’s passing is a devastating loss, not only to his loved ones but also to the countless lives he touched through his work and kindness. He leaves behind his partner, Erin, and their child, Wren, as well as a wide circle of family, friends, and colleagues who cherished him deeply.
In honor of Harry’s memory, PATH Legal is organizing a memorial slideshow. Those who knew him are invited to contribute photos or short videos (under one minute) by sending them to e.arnold@pathlegal.ca. Additionally, written memories can be shared to create a book for Wren, ensuring that Harry’s legacy lives on for his child.
Harry Critchley’s life was a testament to the power of compassion, dedication, and service. His impact on the legal community, his advocacy for marginalized individuals, and his love for his family will not be forgotten. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the remarkable life he lived and the countless ways he made the world a better place.
Rest in peace, Harry. Your light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew you.
