Vansh Gaint Patiala Punjab Death and Obituary – A heartbreaking incident has shaken the Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) community as a 21-year-old student, Vansh Gaint, died by suicide in his dormitory room on Monday night.
Gaint, a third-year student from Patiala, Punjab, was discovered unresponsive by his fellow students, who had to break down his door after he failed to respond to repeated knocks.
The Infocity police have registered a case of accidental death and launched an investigation. Authorities stated that Gaint’s room was locked from the inside, with a cloth secured to the door handle. His roommate, Pritesh, had last spoken to him around 10 PM before leaving the hostel.
Upon returning at 11:30 PM and receiving no response, Pritesh and other concerned students notified the hostel warden. After multiple failed attempts to establish contact, they forced the door open and found him on the floor. Officials reported that Gaint had allegedly hanged himself from the latch.
University authorities responded swiftly by calling the in-house nurse to attend to Gaint before rushing him to SMVS Hospital in the university’s car. Due to the severity of his condition, he was later referred to Apollo Hospital, where he was declared dead approximately 45 minutes after admission.
GNLU Registrar Dr. Nitin Malik confirmed that Gaint’s family arrived by evening. Describing him as an academically excellent student with a strong aptitude for economics, Dr. Malik expressed deep condolences, stating, “Our prayers are with the family.
The family was apprised of the situation and assured of all possible help in the probe. As they wanted a full forensic investigation, the mortal remains were sent to the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad. After due procedure, the family will fly the mortal remains to their native place for last rites.”
In response to the tragedy, GNLU cancelled all academic activities on Tuesday and held a condolence meeting in honor of Gaint. The university has also extended psychological support to his classmates and other students coping with the loss.
Concerns Over Emergency Response and Mental Health Support
Despite the swift response, questions have been raised regarding the university’s emergency infrastructure. Some students expressed concerns over the absence of a dedicated ambulance on campus. Instead, the university relied on its marked car to transport Gaint to the hospital.
Dr. Malik defended the decision, explaining that the university vehicle is stationed near the hostels at night for emergencies. He also mentioned that a nurse is available on campus and had attended to Gaint before the hospital transfer.
Beyond immediate medical concerns, GNLU’s mental health support system has come under scrutiny. Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) S. Shanthakumar reaffirmed the university’s commitment to student well-being, highlighting resources such as access to a counsellor, a clinical psychologist, and a 24/7 online telehealth service.
He emphasized the efforts of the GNLU Wellness Initiative Cell (GWIC), which has been conducting therapeutic activities such as pottery workshops, journaling sessions, and art therapy since 2021.
The Vice-Chancellor assured students that all concerns are handled confidentially, with strict anonymity protocols in place. Suggestion boxes have been installed across the campus to allow students to submit grievances anonymously.
Police Inspector V.R. Kher told local media that Gaint’s phone and laptop have been seized for further examination. Authorities are working to determine any factors that may have contributed to his tragic decision. “No clear reason for the decision has been determined. We have provided psychological support to his classmates and other students. In initial conversations, students described Vansh as an energetic and helpful individual actively involved in various activities. Many observed him going about his usual routine on Tuesday,” Inspector Kher said.
Officials confirmed that statements from Gaint’s family, friends, and fellow students will be recorded as part of the inquiry. Preliminary findings indicate that Gaint had been undergoing therapy for depression, but no foul play is suspected at this stage. The initial post-mortem report confirmed suicide, with further forensic analysis still pending.
The Bigger Picture: Addressing Mental Health in Academic Institutions
Gaint’s tragic passing serves as a sobering reminder of the mental health challenges faced by students in competitive academic environments. Universities across India have been grappling with increasing concerns regarding student well-being, with many institutions now prioritizing mental health initiatives.
Students have voiced the need for enhanced mental health awareness, increased accessibility to professional help, and a more open dialogue about stress and depression. Experts emphasize that alongside academic excellence, fostering a supportive and understanding campus environment is essential for student welfare.
The loss of Vansh Gaint is deeply felt by the GNLU community. As investigations continue, students and faculty members are mourning the tragic departure of a bright and promising student. The incident highlights the importance of mental health support systems in universities and the need for ongoing efforts to prevent such heartbreaking tragedies in the future.
Authorities are urging students to reach out for help if they are struggling, and universities are being encouraged to strengthen their mental health resources to better support students in distress. Gaint’s memory will live on, and his passing will hopefully inspire meaningful change in how institutions address student well-being.
