Ruby Druce, who passed away peacefully at home at the remarkable age of 109. Ruby, who was named Ireland’s oldest person last August following the death of Phyllis Furness, celebrated her 109th birthday on New Year’s Eve, surrounded by love and joy. Her passing marks the end of an extraordinary life filled with resilience, kindness, and an unwavering spirit that inspired all who knew her. The community of Castlefinn and the wider nation of Ireland are mourning the loss of Ruby Druce.
Born and raised in Castlefinn, Ruby Druce lived a life that spanned over a century, witnessing profound changes in the world around her. At the age of 15, she began working in a shirt factory, a job she cherished and often credited as one of the reasons for her long and healthy life. Alongside her dedication to work, Ruby maintained a simple yet effective routine of daily walks and a cod liver oil capsule, which she believed contributed to her vitality.
Ruby’s life was not without its share of heartache. Fifty-three years ago, she lost her beloved husband, Jim. Though the couple had no children of their own, Ruby’s nieces and nephews became the center of her world. She shared an especially close bond with her niece Margo Butler, with whom she lived in Letterkenny for 10 wonderful years after moving there on her 98th birthday. Following Margo’s passing last July, Ruby returned to Castlefinn to live with her niece Carmel Harran and Carmel’s husband, Martin.
Ruby’s family was her greatest joy. She is survived by her nieces Carmel and Claire, her nephew Seamus Ponsonby, and a wide circle of extended family and close friends. Seamus, who lives in Letterkenny with his wife Kathleen, was a regular visitor, as was Claire, who traveled from her home in Canada to spend time with her cherished aunt. Ruby’s love for her family was evident in every conversation and every smile she shared with them.
Ruby’s passing has left a profound void in the lives of those who knew her. Her warmth, wisdom, and gentle nature touched everyone she met. The news of her death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from the community, with many recalling her kindness, her infectious smile, and her ability to make everyone feel special.
Ruby will be waked at the home of her niece, Carmel Harran, in Castlefinn, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 21st, and from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 22nd. Her funeral will take place on Sunday, March 23rd, at 12 p.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Castlefinn, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery. The family has requested privacy on the morning of the funeral and has asked that donations be made to Donegal Carers in lieu of flowers.
As we bid farewell to Ruby Druce, we celebrate a life that was truly well-lived. Her legacy is one of love, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to family and faith. Ruby’s story is a reminder of the beauty of a life filled with purpose and the importance of cherishing every moment with those we hold dear.
May her gentle soul rest in peace, and may her memory continue to inspire us all. Ruby Druce, Ireland’s oldest person, may you fly high with the angels, knowing you were deeply loved and will never be forgotten.
