His eldest daughter, unfortunately, could not make it in time to be by his side as he took his last breath at 9:20 PM.
Bawin was a familiar name in Sarawak politics, known not just for his commitment to the Dayak community but also for his tenacity and persistence in the face of adversity. Throughout his political career, he ran for multiple elections, often contesting fiercely, but never once securing a victory in the formal sense. He contested in the 2008, 2013, and 2018 general elections for the Lubok Antu parliamentary seat under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) banner. His political ambitions did not end with the national elections, as he also ran in state races for Batang Ai in 2011 and Engkilili in 2021.
Despite never achieving electoral success, Bawin’s spirit remained unwavering. His determination to fight for Dayak rights and bring attention to the issues of the community was ever-present, and he continued to advocate for his people long after his official retirement from politics. In 2020, Bawin decided to step away from the political scene, resigning from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and leaving public office. His political career may have ended, but his legacy continued through his grassroots work that spanned decades.
Bawin’s dedication to the Dayak community was a lifelong pursuit. He was instrumental in the formation of the Malaysian Dayak Congress (MDC) in 2005, where he served as its protem president. His belief in the power of unity for the betterment of the community resonated through his actions.
In addition to his work with the MDC, Bawin also played a crucial role in the Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU), leading the organization from 2004 to 2007. His time as the head of SDNU was marked by significant contributions to the organization’s goals, which included promoting Dayak interests and advocating for policies that would improve the lives of rural Dayak communities. His leadership and influence extended beyond political organizations, as he also served in key roles in public institutions, such as the Lubok Antu District Council and the state power utility, Sesco.
Bawin was not only a political figure but also a champion of rural development and cultural preservation. His passion for ensuring that the Dayak community had a voice in decisions that affected their lives was evident throughout his career. His focus was always on improving the conditions of the rural areas and preserving the traditions and culture of the Dayak people. He believed in the importance of education, economic development, and the empowerment of the Dayak community, and he worked tirelessly to make sure these priorities were always on the agenda.
Those who worked with him, whether in a professional or personal capacity, remember Bawin as a man of principle and kindness. His character was known for its warmth and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Bawin had a unique ability to engage with others and build relationships that transcended political boundaries.
