Bruce Boyd Brentwood Shooting – A retired New York City correction officer was shot and killed by police after he allegedly charged at officers while armed with a knife outside his Brentwood home on Wurz Street, Suffolk County Police said. The man was identified as 54-year-old Bruce Boyd.

Officers were dispatched to Boyd’s residence late Thursday to perform a welfare check. Upon arrival, they were let into the home by Boyd’s wife, who informed them that he was inside. According to police, officers found Boyd holding a knife and suffering from what appeared to be two self-inflicted wounds.

Authorities said that the officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, backing out of the house as Boyd followed them outside, still armed with the knife. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, police said Boyd suddenly charged at them, prompting at least one officer to fire his weapon.

Boyd was struck and transported to South Shore University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said there were no prior arrests or known domestic violence incidents involving Boyd, but confirmed that he had a history of emotional and medical issues. His wife was not injured during the incident and is safe, officials said. No officers were harmed.

The shooting remains under investigation, and police have not yet disclosed how many officers fired their weapons or how many shots were fired.

Boyd had served as a correction officer in New York City before retiring.
