Mike Berry Death and Obituary – Mike Berry, the distinguished English singer and actor, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2025, at the age of 82. His death marks the end of a remarkable career that spanned over six decades, leaving an indelible imprint on both the music and television industries. Known for his versatility as an entertainer, Berry achieved fame as a singer, actor, and comedian, captivating audiences with his charm, musical talent, and screen presence.

Born Michael Hubert Bourne on September 24, 1942, in Northampton, England, Berry’s passion for music developed at a young age. Growing up in a family with artistic inclinations, he was drawn to the rhythms of skiffle and rock and roll. After his family moved to Stoke Newington, London, Berry attended William Patten Primary School and later Hackney Downs Grocers’ School. Though he left formal education at the age of 16 to pursue an apprenticeship as a compositor, his true calling soon became clear. Music was his future.

Berry’s initial steps into the music world were as a member of the skiffle group The Rebels, which later evolved into Kenny Lord and the Statesmen. This transformation marked a shift towards electric guitar-based performances, catching the attention of legendary producer Joe Meek. This led to the formation of Mike Berry and the Outlaws, a pivotal move that helped solidify Berry’s place in the British music scene.

Under the mentorship of Joe Meek, Berry’s music career flourished in the early 1960s. His breakout single, “Tribute to Buddy Holly,” released in 1961, was a tribute to the legendary American rock and roll star. Despite facing a temporary ban by the BBC due to its morbid theme, the track still managed to reach No. 24 on the UK Singles Chart. This was just the beginning of Berry’s chart success.

In 1963, his single “Don’t You Think It’s Time” soared to No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart, establishing Berry as a respected figure in the British pop scene. Throughout the years, he continued to release music that resonated with audiences, including his 1972 version of “Drift Away” and a 1980 cover of “The Sunshine of Your Smile,” both of which enjoyed commercial success. Berry’s ability to navigate different musical genres highlighted his adaptability and enduring appeal.

While Berry’s music career remained strong, he also ventured into acting, showcasing his multifaceted talents. In 1979, he was cast in the beloved children’s series Worzel Gummidge, where he portrayed Mr. Peters, a role that introduced him to a new generation of fans. His time on Worzel Gummidge led to further acting opportunities, including his iconic portrayal of Mr. Bert Spooner in the long-running sitcom Are You Being Served? from 1981 to 1985. Berry’s comedic timing and likable screen presence made him a beloved figure in British television. He would remain the last surviving regular cast member of the show after Nicholas Smith’s passing in 2015.

Beyond his professional achievements, family played an important role in Berry’s life. His brother, Bette Bourne, was a well-known drag performer, actor, and activist, which highlighted the creative spirit that ran through their family. Berry’s upbringing in a family with ties to Rhodesia, coupled with his mother’s involvement in amateur theatre, undoubtedly shaped his artistic pursuits and love for performance.

In his later years, Mike Berry continued to perform, proving that his passion for music and acting never diminished. In February 2025, he delivered a sold-out show at The Half Moon in Putney, London, a testament to his enduring appeal and dedication to his craft. His manager and long-time friend, Peter Stockton, reflected on Berry’s illustrious 64-year career, describing him as a remarkable talent whose contributions to both music and television would leave a lasting legacy.

Mike Berry’s passing leaves a significant void in the world of entertainment, but his work will continue to inspire generations to come. His contributions to the British music and television landscape will be remembered fondly, ensuring his place as an iconic figure in the history of entertainment.
