Davis Randle Death and Obituary – The community at duPont Manual High School in Louisville, Kentucky, is mourning the loss of one of its brightest young stars, Davis Randle, a senior and standout basketball player who passed away after a courageous battle with osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. Davis’s death has left a profound impact on his school, teammates, and the entire city, as tributes and messages of love pour in from all corners of the community.

Davis was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in December 2023, after experiencing persistent knee pain and a noticeable decline in his athletic performance. Known for his explosive playing style, Davis had been a force on the basketball court, but in the months leading up to his diagnosis, he began to noticeably slow down during practices. His decline in performance was puzzling to those who had always seen him as one of the most energetic and fast players on the team. The diagnosis, when it came, was a shock to many, as Davis had always been in excellent health prior to the onset of his symptoms.

In February 2025, Davis’s bravery in the face of his illness became widely known when he was interviewed by WDRB News. During this interview, Davis shared the emotional toll of going from dunking basketballs to struggling to walk due to the effects of cancer. “Going from dunking the basketball to not being able to walk, that’s a big jump,” Davis said, encapsulating the emotional and physical hardships he faced during his battle with the disease. His words resonated deeply with those who followed his journey, symbolizing his unyielding spirit and courage.

Despite undergoing grueling treatments, Davis remained a fixture at Manual High School, continuing to support his team and school community throughout his illness. In February 2025, the school honored Davis during Senior Night, a moment that highlighted not only his athletic achievements but also his strength and resilience as a person. Davis was wheeled onto the court in his uniform, receiving a standing ovation from a packed gymnasium. The event was an emotional one, filled with both tears and cheers as his teammates, family, and friends rallied around him.

The news of Davis’s death on Monday, confirmed by Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS), sparked an outpouring of grief from all corners of Louisville. On social media, students, teachers, athletes, and public officials expressed their condolences and shared stories of how Davis had touched their lives. A teacher of Davis’s shared, “He was a leader, a friend, and a shining example of perseverance. Even when he was in pain, he smiled and made others laugh. That’s who he was.” Similarly, Manual’s basketball coach praised Davis’s attitude and determination, saying, “He showed us what it means to be truly strong. He never gave up on life or his teammates.”

Osteosarcoma, the type of cancer Davis battled, is most commonly diagnosed in children and young adults, often affecting the long bones of the arms or legs. Symptoms such as knee pain can often mimic common sports injuries, making it difficult to diagnose in its early stages. Davis’s journey has raised awareness about the importance of listening to one’s body and advocating for thorough medical evaluation when something feels wrong.

In the wake of his death, Davis’s family and school community have expressed their desire to honor his memory by supporting cancer research and helping other families facing similar battles. Plans for a scholarship or memorial fund in his name are underway, and it is expected that his jersey will be retired in a special ceremony later this year. To help students and staff cope with their grief, duPont Manual High School has provided access to grief counselors, and various remembrance events are being planned to celebrate Davis’s life and legacy.

As the city of Louisville continues to process this heartbreaking loss, Davis Randle’s story will be remembered not just for the promise he showed on the basketball court, but for the incredible strength, positivity, and perseverance he displayed in the face of overwhelming adversity. Davis’s light, as one student aptly put it, “will never go out.” His legacy of joy, love, and unwavering determination will continue to inspire those who knew him for years to come.
