The tragic death of 17-year-old Deangelo Miles has left the West Pullman community on Chicago’s South Side in shock and mourning. The shooting occurred early Sunday morning, June 1, 2025, around 3:08 a.m. in the 11900-block of South Wallace Street.

According to the Chicago Police Department, officers were dispatched to the area after reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they found Deangelo in an alley, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Despite the rapid response of first responders, the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified the victim as Deangelo Miles, a young man whose life ended far too soon.

The senseless violence that claimed Deangelo’s life has sparked renewed outrage and sadness in a city that continues to grapple with gun violence, particularly among its youth.

Deangelo was more than a statistic. He was a son, a friend, a student, and a teenager with dreams and potential. Those who knew him describe him as soft-spoken and kind, someone who loved music and had a talent for art.

He was said to be considering a future in graphic design or animation. At school, Deangelo was known to be polite and reserved, with a tight-knit group of friends who are now devastated by the sudden loss.

The Chicago Police Department has yet to identify a suspect, and no arrests have been made. Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward.

They are especially interested in security footage from nearby homes or businesses that may have captured the events leading up to or following the shooting. Tips can be submitted anonymously through the city’s Crime Stoppers hotline.

In the wake of Deangelo’s death, community leaders are speaking out about the continued toll of gun violence in neighborhoods like West Pullman.

Advocates stress the need for stronger intervention programs for at-risk youth, greater investment in mental health services, and more community-based initiatives to create safe spaces for teenagers. “This is not just a policing issue,” said one local organizer. “It’s a public health crisis, and it takes all of us to stop this cycle.”

A makeshift memorial has been established near the scene of the shooting. Candles, flowers, and handwritten notes now line the alley where Deangelo’s life was cut short.

Friends and classmates have visited the site to grieve, pray, and remember the moments they shared with him. On social media, tributes are pouring in with messages of sorrow, disbelief, and calls for justice. “Rest easy, D,” one post read. “You didn’t deserve this.”

Family members, still in shock, have asked for privacy as they process their loss. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help cover funeral expenses and to support the family during this incredibly difficult time. The campaign has already garnered support from both neighbors and strangers who have been moved by Deangelo’s story.

As the investigation continues, the South Side community faces another painful reminder of the fragility of life and the pressing need for systemic change.

For now, Deangelo Miles is being remembered not by the manner in which he died, but by the life he lived—his smile, his quiet determination, and the dreams he held onto until the very end.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the Chicago Police Department or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers. As loved ones prepare to lay Deangelo to rest, the city mourns the loss of another young soul to gun violence.
