JACKSON, MISS. — Jackson Police have confirmed that Michael Tate Jr., 19, turned himself in around 6:00 p.m. on June 9, days after authorities issued a warrant for his arrest in connection to the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Zacarius Berry.
According to Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade, Tate has been formally charged with murder following the May 23 incident, which sent shockwaves through the community. Berry’s body was discovered in the 200 block of Rutherford B. Hayes Circle, and investigators quickly identified Tate as the prime suspect in the case.
The shooting occurred just as Zacarius Berry was preparing to graduate from middle school, a milestone his family will now forever associate with grief. Chief Wade called the incident a “senseless tragedy” and described Berry as a young man with promise, whose life was cut short far too soon.
Before his surrender, Tate was considered armed and dangerous, prompting a community-wide search and a strong appeal from law enforcement for public assistance. His decision to turn himself in has provided a measure of relief to a grieving city still reeling from the loss.
At this time, police have not released a motive for the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional suspects or charges.
