PAULDING COUNTY, GA — A fatal shooting on Monday afternoon has left one man dead and another in custody as Paulding County detectives continue to investigate a tragic road rage incident that unfolded near the intersection of Ridge Road and Cohran Store Road. The shooting, which took place on June 9, 2025, has shocked the local community, raising questions about the increasingly volatile nature of driver interactions and the deadly consequences of unresolved confrontations on the road.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:25 p.m. when the Paulding County E-911 center received a distressing call reporting a possible shooting. The caller, later identified as the victim, stated that he had been shot following an altercation with another driver. According to the preliminary findings, the confrontation began as a road rage incident, and tensions quickly escalated into gunfire. The victim described the shooter as a Black male driving a black SUV.

Victim Sought Help Before Succumbing to Injuries

Despite being shot, the victim, 41-year-old Shawn Christopher Brannon, a white male from Piedmont, Alabama, managed to drive himself to Paulding County Fire Station 5, located at 4215 Ridge Road in Douglasville. It was there that he sought help from first responders. They immediately provided medical aid and arranged for his transport to Wellstar Paulding Hospital. Tragically, despite their best efforts, Brannon succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

Brannon’s death has left the local community in mourning, and news of his passing has quickly spread across both Southern Lehigh and neighboring areas. As investigators began piecing together the details surrounding the incident, the community has been left grappling with the senseless loss of a man’s life due to what began as a simple traffic dispute. The tragedy has also brought renewed attention to the dangers of road rage, a phenomenon that has been increasing on U.S. roads in recent years.

    Swift Investigation Leads to Arrest

Detectives from the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office quickly launched a thorough investigation into the shooting. Using a combination of investigative techniques, including interviews with witnesses and evidence collection, law enforcement was able to identify the suspect. The suspect’s vehicle, a black SUV, was located, and investigators soon tracked down the suspect to his residence. The suspect, 46-year-old Collins Pruitt, a Black male from Cobb County, was taken into custody without incident.

Pruitt was questioned by authorities, and after reviewing the evidence, detectives concluded that the shooting stemmed from a mutual confrontation that spiraled into deadly violence. Following a careful legal review, it was determined that the facts did not meet the threshold for a murder charge, but instead, Pruitt has been charged with Voluntary Manslaughter. Voluntary Manslaughter is a felony under Georgia law, and Pruitt is currently being held without bond at the Paulding County Jail as the investigation continues.

The charge of Voluntary Manslaughter reflects the tragic outcome of what began as a road rage encounter. While the full details of the confrontation are still being investigated, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly road rage can escalate into violence. The shooting, which occurred in broad daylight, has once again highlighted the dangers of unresolved tension between drivers.

    Road Rage Turned Deadly

Investigators have confirmed that the shooting was a direct result of road rage, a problem that continues to plague roads across the United States. Road rage incidents have become more frequent and, unfortunately, more deadly. While the precise details of the altercation between Brannon and Pruitt remain unclear, this incident underscores the growing risks associated with aggressive driving and the consequences that can follow when tensions are not diffused.

Authorities have cautioned the public about the dangers of engaging in road rage and have stressed the importance of remaining calm in tense driving situations. The tragic death of Shawn Christopher Brannon is a painful reminder that a momentary lapse in judgment on the road can lead to irreversible consequences. The event has sparked conversations about the need for improved driver education, better road safety measures, and public awareness campaigns to reduce the number of road rage incidents.

    Ongoing Investigation and Community Appeal

The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office continues to conduct a thorough investigation into the shooting. Detectives are working diligently to collect all possible evidence, including reviewing dash cam footage, gathering surveillance video from nearby businesses or residences, and interviewing potential witnesses who may have seen or heard the events leading up to the shooting. Law enforcement has urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.

Witnesses who may have been in the vicinity of Ridge Road and Cohran Store Road around the time of the shooting are urged to contact the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office Tip Line at (770) 443-3047. Information can also be submitted anonymously through the Paulding Sheriff mobile app. The authorities have emphasized the importance of public cooperation in bringing clarity to the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensuring that justice is served.

    Sheriff’s Statement

In a public statement, Paulding County Sheriff Gary Gulledge extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and reassured the public that the Sheriff’s Office is fully committed to a thorough and transparent investigation. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr. Brannon during this incredibly difficult time,” Sheriff Gulledge said. “Violence on our roads is never acceptable, and we will pursue justice with integrity and diligence. We also urge everyone in our community to remain calm and patient as our detectives continue their work.”

    Community Shock and Reflection

The shooting has shocked many in the Paulding County area, particularly because it occurred during the afternoon on a busy roadway. Social media posts from local residents have expressed their sorrow for the victim’s family and voiced concerns about the increasing aggression seen on local roads. Many community members are calling for increased traffic enforcement and public awareness campaigns to address the growing problem of road rage.

This tragedy has prompted local residents to reflect on the broader issue of road safety and the urgent need to address the underlying causes of road rage. Some have suggested that public campaigns highlighting the importance of driving with patience and understanding could help reduce the number of violent incidents. Additionally, there have been calls for increased law enforcement presence on the roads to discourage aggressive driving and ensure the safety of all drivers.

This incident also highlights the need for better mental health support and resources for individuals who struggle with anger management or other emotional challenges while on the road. Addressing road rage requires not only improved education and law enforcement but also a broader societal approach to understanding and managing emotions behind the wheel.

The community remains in shock, and as the investigation continues, people are left grappling with the tragedy and what it means for their own safety and interactions on the road. The fatal shooting of Shawn Christopher Brannon is a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk on the roads when tempers flare, and how quickly situations can spiral out of control.

As the investigation continues, the hope is that justice will be served, and that the tragic loss of one life will inspire others to think more carefully about how they interact with others on the road. Road rage is a serious issue, and this event underscores the urgent need for greater awareness, compassion, and understanding on our roads.
