The community of Sterling, Virginia, is in mourning following the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Shahidul Islam, affectionately known as “Shahid,” who passed away on the blessed morning of Eid, Friday, June 6, 2025, at the age of 37. His unexpected passing has left an irreplaceable void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the local community that he loved and served with devotion.
Shahid was a beloved member of both the local Muslim community and the broader Sterling area. Born and raised in Sterling, Shahid had recently relocated to Lake Anna, Virginia, but he remained deeply connected to the community where he spent much of his life. His friendly demeanor, generous spirit, and commitment to helping others made him a familiar and cherished presence to all who knew him. Shahid’s passing on such a significant and sacred day as Eid has only deepened the sense of loss felt by those who loved him.
Shahid is survived by his devoted wife, Marisa Mullen, who shared a deep bond with him and will miss him dearly. He is also mourned by his parents, MD Abu Taher and Jahanara Begum, who are heartbroken over the loss of their son. Shahid’s siblings, Ayesha, Jahangir, and Jahid, are also grieving, as are his nieces and nephews—Amima, Adiba, Ayanna, Abdullah, Ahmed, Anais, Chloe, and Makenna. To them, Shahid was not just an uncle but a friend, a mentor, and a guiding light in their lives. The loss of someone so central to their lives has left them with an immense sorrow. Shahid was also the nephew of Abdul Hashem, a longtime member of the ADAMS Center, who, like many others in the community, is mourning the loss of a beloved family member.
In remembrance of Shahid’s life, a Salat-al-Janazah (funeral prayer) will be held on Monday, June 9, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. (Dhuhr prayer) at the ADAMS Center in Sterling, Virginia. Following the prayer, Shahid will be laid to rest at Sterling Cemetery, located at 45835 West Church Road, Sterling, VA 20164. Family, friends, and community members are invited to attend and offer their condolences, paying their respects to a man who touched so many lives in a positive and meaningful way.
