UK Sanctions Israeli Ministers Ben-Gvir and Smotrich Over Incitement of Violence Against Palestinians

In a significant move on the international stage, the UK government has imposed sanctions on two Israeli ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, in response to their “repeated incitements of violence against Palestinian communities” in the occupied West Bank. The sanctions include banning the ministers from entering the UK and freezing any assets they may hold within the country. These measures, announced by Foreign Secretary David Lammy, come amid growing international pressure on Israel regarding its actions in Gaza and the West Bank.

Ben-Gvir, Israel’s National Security Minister, and Smotrich, the Finance Minister, have both been outspoken critics of Palestinians and their rights, particularly during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza. They have also been accused of contributing to the rising violence in the West Bank through their inflammatory rhetoric and policies. The UK government’s decision to sanction the two ministers marks a firm stance against extremism and human rights violations in the region.

Lammy, in his announcement, emphasized that Ben-Gvir and Smotrich had incited extremist violence and played a significant role in perpetrating abuses against Palestinian civilians. “The actions of these individuals have led to serious human rights violations and the further destabilization of the region,” he said. His comments were followed by a joint move from the UK, Norway, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, which all collectively imposed similar sanctions on the ministers. These measures reflect the international community’s growing concern over the ongoing violence in Palestine, which has claimed the lives of countless innocent civilians.

The UK’s Foreign Office also stated that the sanctions are part of a broader effort to address the violence and intimidation perpetrated by Israeli settlers against Palestinian communities in the West Bank. The Foreign Office condemned the ongoing violence and called for an end to the expansion of Israeli settlements, which are widely considered illegal under international law. The UK government has made it clear that the rising violence by Israeli settlers must cease in order to move toward a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In response to the sanctions, Israeli officials expressed outrage. The Israeli Foreign Minister, Gideon Saar, called the UK’s actions “outrageous,” and promised that Israel would take action in response. “It is outrageous that elected representatives and members of the government are subjected to these kinds of measures,” Saar said. Smotrich himself reacted with contempt during the inauguration of a new settlement in the West Bank, stating that Britain “has already tried once to prevent us from settling the cradle of our homeland” and that Israel would continue building settlements in the region. His comments underscored the ongoing defiance from Israeli officials, who continue to pursue policies that many in the international community, including the UK, view as illegal and harmful to the peace process.

Smotrich and Ben-Gvir lead two ultra-nationalist parties within Israel’s governing coalition, a coalition that holds a slim majority in the Israeli parliament. The Religious Zionism party, led by Smotrich, and Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power), led by Ben-Gvir, hold significant influence in the government, with their combined support being crucial for the survival of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration. Both parties have been criticized for their hardline stance on Palestinians and their commitment to expanding Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

In addition to their controversial views on the Palestinian issue, both ministers have been heavily criticized for their stance on the war in Gaza. They have opposed allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza and have advocated for the resettlement of Palestinians outside of the territory. Their rhetoric, particularly regarding the forced displacement of Palestinians, has sparked widespread condemnation, with many accusing them of perpetuating war crimes and human rights violations. The sanctions imposed by the UK are a direct response to these actions and statements, signaling that such behavior will not be tolerated by the international community.

The sanctions are a significant escalation of the UK’s response to the ongoing violence in Gaza and the West Bank, following a series of diplomatic and political actions taken in recent months. In May 2024, the leaders of Britain, France, and Canada issued a joint statement expressing concern that Israel’s actions in Gaza could be in violation of international law. This was followed by the suspension of free trade talks between the UK and Israel, as well as a series of sanctions aimed at individuals and groups linked to the violence. The UK’s decision to sanction Ben-Gvir and Smotrich reflects growing frustration with the Israeli government’s handling of the conflict and a shift in how the UK views its relationship with Israel.

Foreign Office Minister Hamish Falconer, speaking in the House of Commons, explained that the sanctions were necessary because of the ministers’ direct role in inciting violence in the West Bank. “These individuals are responsible for inciting settler violence, which has led to the deaths of Palestinian civilians and the displacement of entire communities,” Falconer said. He also highlighted that the year 2024 had seen the worst settler violence in the West Bank in two decades, with the situation showing no signs of improvement. “The UK will not stand by and allow these abuses to continue without consequences,” he added.

The decision to sanction Ben-Gvir and Smotrich is part of a larger trend of increasing pressure on Israel to abide by international law and take responsibility for its actions. The UK government’s decision comes on the heels of the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion, which reaffirmed that Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are illegal under international law. This legal position is supported by the vast majority of the international community, although Israel continues to dispute the findings.

In addition to the sanctions, the UK has also joined other countries in calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages held by Hamas. Lammy stressed that the UK government’s goal is to ensure the safe delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza and to work toward a long-term solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “We will continue to work with our international partners to bring about a two-state solution, which is the only viable path to lasting peace in the region,” he said.

The situation in Gaza remains dire, with tens of thousands of lives lost since the escalation of violence began in October 2023. The UK’s sanctions on Ben-Gvir and Smotrich are part of a broader effort to hold those responsible for human rights violations accountable and to put pressure on Israel to change its policies. The ongoing violence in Gaza and the West Bank has drawn international condemnation, and the UK’s actions are a clear message that the international community will not tolerate such abuses.

In conclusion, the UK’s decision to sanction Israeli ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich represents a firm stance against extremism and human rights violations in the occupied West Bank. These sanctions are part of a broader international effort to address the ongoing violence and to hold those responsible for these abuses accountable. As tensions continue to rise in Gaza and the West Bank, the UK and its allies will likely continue to apply pressure on Israel to abide by international law and work toward a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The future of the region remains uncertain, but these actions reflect the growing desire for justice and accountability on the global stage.
