GREENVILLE, SC – The Hughes Academy of Science and Technology community is grieving the devastating loss of Will Hand, a bright and spirited 8th-grade student who passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 8, 2025, following sudden medical complications. Will’s passing has left a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, classmates, and the entire school community. Known for his infectious enthusiasm, kind nature, and natural charisma, Will touched the lives of everyone he encountered and left an indelible mark on those who knew him.

Will was described by those who knew him as “smart, fun, and energetic.” His radiant personality and boundless joy made him a beloved figure at Hughes Academy and in the broader Greenville community. Whether it was his flowing hair, his ever-present smile, or his love for sports, Will was a vibrant presence wherever he went. His ability to bring light and happiness to every room was remarkable, and his positive energy was contagious. His peers admired his ability to make others feel welcome and heard, and his teachers praised his sharp intellect and enthusiasm for learning.

The tragedy began in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 8, when Will woke up feeling unwell. According to his family, Will’s condition worsened rapidly within hours, leaving everyone close to him in shock. Despite efforts to save him, Will passed away, and his family was left to navigate the devastating reality of their loss. The suddenness of his passing has left his family, friends, and school community in profound grief, struggling to understand how a young life so full of promise and potential could be taken so suddenly.

In an emotional statement, Will’s family shared their sorrow, offering a touching tribute to the son they lost: “This is how I will always choose to remember Will,” his family said. “Flowing hair, big smile, and in sports attire. I will see you again, son.” Their words reflect the deep pain of losing Will, but also the love and warmth that will continue to define his memory. The family’s message serves as a reminder of the joy and light Will brought into their lives and the lives of others.

Will’s sudden death has left an immense void in the halls of Hughes Academy, where he was not only a student but a source of energy and inspiration. Teachers and students alike are grappling with the loss of a young man known for his kindness, humor, and insatiable curiosity. Will’s teachers recall his sharp mind and his enthusiasm for learning, which made him a standout student in the classroom. He was never afraid to ask questions, and his passion for knowledge was evident in every subject he tackled. His teachers admired his dedication to learning and his ability to approach challenges with both determination and a sense of fun.

His peers, meanwhile, remember Will for his generosity of spirit, his infectious laughter, and his ability to make everyone feel like they were a part of the group. Will’s kindness knew no bounds—whether helping a friend with homework, cheering on his classmates during a game, or simply offering a listening ear, he was always there for those around him. His friendships were deep and genuine, and his positive attitude made him a natural leader among his peers.

In an official statement, Hughes Academy expressed their deep sorrow over Will’s passing: “We are heartbroken to share the unexpected passing of one of our 8th-grade students, Will Hand, due to medical complications. Will was a smart, fun, and energetic young man who brought joy and laughter to so many at Hughes and in our community. He was deeply loved by his family, friends, and our staff. He will be missed by us all.” The statement reflected not only the loss felt by the school but also the deep appreciation for the impact Will had on the school community during his time there. His memory will forever be cherished by the faculty, staff, and fellow students who were privileged to know him.

In response to the grief experienced by students and staff, the school has made counseling resources available to help everyone cope with the emotional toll of Will’s passing. The school community, while devastated, is coming together to support one another during this incredibly difficult time. Hughes Academy, like many other communities affected by the loss of a young life, is providing a space for reflection, support, and healing as everyone works through their grief.

Will’s parents, while overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the community, have asked for time and space as they process their grief. The family has expressed deep gratitude for the messages of love and support they’ve received, acknowledging that the kindness of others has been a source of comfort during this unimaginable time. They have encouraged everyone to celebrate Will’s life in their own way, whether through memories, stories, or personal tributes.

A memorial service for Will will be announced in the coming days, and the Hughes Academy community is preparing to honor his memory. The service will provide an opportunity for friends, family, and classmates to come together and reflect on the life of a young man who touched so many lives in such a short time. Though Will is no longer physically with them, his spirit will live on through the countless memories, the lessons he taught, and the impact he made on everyone he encountered.

As the Greenville community mourns the loss of Will, they are holding onto the memories of his radiant personality, his laughter, and the joy he brought to so many. Will’s life was one full of promise and potential, and though his time was far too short, his legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him. His kindness, his enthusiasm for life, and his unwavering ability to make others feel loved and valued will forever be remembered.

Will Hand’s passing serves as a stark reminder of how fragile life can be, and how important it is to cherish every moment with the people we love. His family, friends, teachers, and classmates will carry his memory with them always, and his legacy of kindness, generosity, and curiosity will continue to inspire future generations of students at Hughes Academy and beyond.

Rest in peace, Will. Your light, your laughter, and your spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew you. You will be forever missed, but never forgotten.
