Gary England, the legendary broadcast meteorologist widely known as “Oklahoma’s Master Meteorologist,” passed away at the age of 85. His death marks the end of an era for the state he served so faithfully and fearlessly for more than four decades.

A pioneering voice in severe weather coverage, England became a household name across Oklahoma and beyond for his calm authority, life-saving forecasts, and unwavering commitment to public safety. He died on [insert date] surrounded by family, according to a statement from his loved ones.

Gary England began his broadcasting career in the 1960s and joined KWTV News 9 in Oklahoma City in 1972. It was there that he revolutionized weather reporting, becoming one of the first meteorologists in the nation to implement Doppler radar on television and issue computerized tornado warnings.

Throughout his career, England guided viewers through some of the most devastating weather events in state history—including the infamous May 3, 1999 tornado outbreak. His calm, clear instructions and deep understanding of Oklahoma’s volatile climate saved countless lives and earned the deep trust of generations of Oklahomans.

More than a weatherman, Gary England was a mentor, innovator, and public servant. He authored several books, inspired aspiring meteorologists, and became a pop culture icon—occasionally making appearances in films and television shows. His voice became synonymous with authority during crisis and comfort during uncertainty.

He retired from daily broadcasts in 2013 but remained an active advisor and symbol of excellence in meteorology. In recognition of his achievements, he received numerous honors, including induction into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame and the National Weather Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

His legacy lives on not only through the lives he helped protect but also through the many meteorologists and broadcasters he mentored.

A public memorial service will be announced in the coming days, giving Oklahomans and admirers nationwide a chance to honor the man who helped them weather the storm.

Gary England wasn’t just a meteorologist—he was Oklahoma’s voice in the storm, and his absence will be deeply felt across the state he loved and served so well.
