FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — What started as a joyful Father’s Day outing for 33-year-old Antwon Wilson of Lauderhill quickly turned into an unimaginable tragedy, as he lost his life while heroically saving his daughter from drowning in the waters off Fort Lauderdale Beach. The incident occurred on Sunday evening near the B Ocean Resort, just minutes after lifeguards had closed for the day, and has left the community in shock. Antwon’s selfless act has captured the hearts of those who knew him and drawn attention to the risks of swimming in the ocean, especially during unsupervised hours.
According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue (FLFR), emergency units were dispatched around 7:20 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting swimmers in distress near Seabreeze Boulevard. Among them was Antwon Wilson, who had rushed into the water after noticing two of his children struggling in the strong current. His daughter, who was among those in distress, was being carried away by the waves when Antwon, without hesitation, went in to save her.
“She was in the water with multiple other family members. The father was nearby and able to make it to her and help keep her afloat before he went under,” said FLFR Battalion Chief Danny Moran. Witnesses described the harrowing scene as Antwon fought valiantly to keep his daughter above water, sacrificing his own safety to ensure her survival. His efforts to protect his daughter ultimately led to his tragic death, as he slipped beneath the waves while trying to keep her safe.
While the lifeguards had officially ended their shift just 20 minutes earlier, several remained in the area as they were in the process of loading up equipment. When the distress calls came in, the lifeguards immediately responded. Their quick reaction, paired with the efforts of a good Samaritan who also jumped into the water to help, helped save Antwon’s daughter and another child.
“A lot of them were still in the area,” said Moran. “They were the first on scene, they turned their trucks around, and acted without hesitation.” A bystander, who was described as a good Samaritan, also jumped into the ocean to assist but found himself overwhelmed by the powerful current. He was briefly pulled under but managed to resurface and make it back to the beach. Ocean Rescue lieutenants were able to reach Antwon’s daughter and safely bring her to shore, but by then, her father had already been pulled under.
A frantic search for Antwon Wilson followed, with lifeguards, firefighters, and emergency responders combing the water. Despite the heroic efforts to find him, it was not until later that evening that Wilson was located. He was brought to shore and immediately administered CPR. Antwon, along with his daughter and the good Samaritan, was transported to Broward Health Medical Center. While his daughter and the Samaritan were responsive and expected to recover physically, Antwon’s injuries were too severe. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The emotional trauma of the incident will likely leave a lasting mark on those involved, particularly his daughter, who survived thanks to her father’s selfless act. As of the latest update, she and the good Samaritan were both recovering, but the psychological scars of the incident, coupled with the traumatic loss of her father, will take time to heal.
Antwon Wilson’s death has left the Lauderhill community devastated. Known for his deep love for his family and his community, Antwon was always the first to volunteer his time for youth sports, community events, and family gatherings. He had a strong presence, always willing to lend a hand, and was admired for his commitment to the people around him.
“He died doing what any real father would do — protecting his children,” said family friend Tiana Moore. “Antwon was a hero before this, but now the whole world knows it.” Friends and family have begun sharing tributes on social media, describing him as a devoted father, loyal friend, and generous spirit who always put his family first. His selfless sacrifice has turned him into a symbol of love and protection, and his passing has brought the community closer together, as people reflect on his dedication to his family and his willingness to put others before himself.
Local leaders and community members have been vocal in their grief, offering condolences and support to Antwon’s family. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with funeral expenses and provide support for Antwon’s children, ensuring that his legacy of love and selflessness is carried forward. Neighbors in Lauderhill are planning a vigil to honor Antwon’s life, where candles will be lit, and stories will be shared about the man who gave his life so his daughter could live. “This is what fatherhood is about,” said Pastor Jerome Brooks, who leads a church near the family’s home. “Antwon’s story is heartbreaking, but it’s also beautiful. He gave everything for his child. That’s love in its purest form.”
The tragedy has also served as a reminder of the dangers of swimming in the ocean outside of lifeguard-supervised hours. While the water may appear calm, hidden currents and changing tides can present significant risks. The Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue department has issued warnings for beachgoers to be cautious when swimming and to always pay attention to flag warnings and other safety measures. Officials stress the importance of swimming in designated areas and remaining close to the shore, particularly when with children, as conditions in the water can change unexpectedly.
Though Antwon’s life ended far too soon, his final moments were a testament to the fierce and protective love of a father. On a day meant to celebrate fatherhood, Antwon lived and died in the truest expression of that role, putting his daughter’s safety above his own without a second thought. His daughter will grow up knowing that her father’s last act was for her, and his legacy of courage, selflessness, and love will continue to inspire others long after his passing.
Rest in peace, Antwon Wilson. Your courage will never be forgotten, and the love you gave will continue to live on in the hearts of your family and community. Your selflessness has left a lasting impact on everyone who knew you, and your sacrifice will always be remembered.
