WEST VALLEY CITY, UT — The annual WestFest celebration, a highlight of the summer for families in West Valley City, turned into a scene of unimaginable horror on Sunday night, June 16, 2025. What was meant to be a night of joy and community spirit quickly became one of sorrow and tragedy when a violent confrontation between two groups escalated into a shooting. The incident left five people shot, including an infant, and tragically claimed the lives of three victims, sending shockwaves through Utah and beyond.

According to a statement from West Valley City spokesperson Roxeanne Vainuku, the shooting occurred around 9:20 p.m. as officers on patrol at the festival observed a verbal dispute escalating between two groups of individuals. As tensions mounted, the situation rapidly became more dangerous, and before police could fully intervene, a 16-year-old male suspect pulled out a firearm and began firing into the crowd.

The sudden eruption of gunfire caught festival-goers by surprise, sending families fleeing in panic. The sounds of music and laughter, which had filled the air moments before, were replaced by gunshots and screams, forever changing what was meant to be a day of celebration. Officers on duty responded immediately, with one officer returning fire at the suspect, though no bystanders were harmed by police gunfire. The suspect fled the scene but was quickly apprehended by officers on the scene and taken into custody without further incident.

The identity of the 16-year-old suspect has not been released, as he is a minor. However, he is facing multiple charges, including three counts of aggravated murder, attempted murder, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Authorities are investigating how the suspect acquired the firearm and whether others may have been involved in the incident, including the possibility of gang involvement or prior altercations between the two groups involved.

In the aftermath of the shooting, five people were found suffering from gunshot wounds. Three of them — an adult male, an adult female, and a baby under one year old — tragically succumbed to their injuries despite the best efforts of first responders and medical personnel. The other two victims, who sustained serious injuries, were transported to a nearby hospital where they are currently in stable condition. Their names have not been publicly released, pending family notification, but the grief over this senseless violence is already deeply felt by the community.

“We are devastated,” said Mayor Karen Lang in a statement. “This was supposed to be a day of joy, family, and community. Instead, it became a day of heartbreak. The loss of a child — an infant — is unbearable. Our prayers are with the families who are living through every parent’s worst nightmare.”

In response to the tragedy, the city and the community have rallied to support the victims’ families. A memorial vigil is being planned for later this week at Centennial Park, where mourners have already begun leaving candles, flowers, and teddy bears to honor the victims and express solidarity with those affected by the violence. The vigil will offer a chance for the community to come together, grieve, and support one another during this incredibly difficult time.

In the wake of the shooting, WestFest — an annual event that brings families from all over West Valley City together for food, music, and fun — has been canceled indefinitely. Organizers expressed their deep sorrow in a statement, acknowledging the heartbreak that has overshadowed the event. “WestFest has always been about unity and joy,” the statement read. “We are heartbroken that our event has been overshadowed by violence and senseless loss. We grieve with the community and stand with the victims’ families.”

As the investigation into the shooting continues, the West Valley City Police Department, in collaboration with federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), are actively working to gather evidence and piece together the events that led to the deadly shooting. Investigators are reviewing security footage from the festival grounds, interviewing witnesses, and following up on forensic evidence collected at the scene. Police Chief Colby Preston assured the community that law enforcement is doing everything in their power to bring those responsible to justice. “We are working tirelessly to ensure every question is answered and that justice is served,” he said. “We will not allow this tragedy to define our city, but we will not ignore the hard truths it brings to light.”

The shooting has reignited concerns about gun violence and safety at public events, and officials are now considering additional security measures for future gatherings. “We will be looking at the security procedures at our public events and considering what can be done to prevent something like this from happening again,” said Chief Preston. “This includes exploring options such as metal detectors, surveillance cameras, and an increased police presence at future events.”

In the aftermath of the shooting, the community has been left searching for ways to heal. The residents of West Valley City, who were used to gathering in peace for celebrations like WestFest, are now grappling with the impact of the violence. Local churches, mental health centers, and grief counselors are offering support services to those affected by the tragedy.

Residents of the city are also coming together to help the victims’ families. A fundraising effort has been launched to assist with funeral expenses and to provide long-term support for those impacted by the tragedy.

“This wasn’t supposed to happen here,” said Lena Ramirez, a mother of three who was attending WestFest with her family when the shooting occurred. “We were just steps away. It could have been any of us.” The pain and fear expressed by residents highlight the broader concerns over the safety of public spaces and the need for greater measures to protect citizens from the growing threat of gun violence.

As investigators continue to piece together what happened, the focus of the West Valley City Police Department and other law enforcement agencies is clear — finding those responsible for this senseless act of violence and ensuring that justice is served. The city is determined to move forward, but as the grieving process begins, it’s evident that this tragedy will leave an indelible mark on the community.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the West Valley City Police Department at (801) 965-4400 or to submit anonymous tips to Utah Crime Stoppers at (801) 487-POST. Those who may have captured video footage or photos of the incident are particularly encouraged to come forward, as their information could be vital in the investigation.

As West Valley City grapples with the grief of this unimaginable tragedy, the memory of the victims and the resilience of the community will serve as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is hope for healing, unity, and justice.

If you or someone you know needs support, Utah Mental Health Services is offering free counseling services to those impacted by the shooting. Call 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or text UTAH to 741741 to speak with a counselor 24/7.

Rest in peace to the victims of this senseless violence. You will never be forgotten, and your memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved you.
