GULF BREEZE, FL — The Gulf Breeze community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Shawn Smith, a 38-year-old man whose life was tragically cut short in a fatal vehicle collision early Wednesday morning in Santa Rosa County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 12:00 a.m. when Shawn was traveling eastbound in a sedan. His vehicle collided with the rear of a van driven by a 68-year-old Gulf Breeze man. The impact forced both vehicles to cross into the westbound side of the highway, eventually coming to rest just east of Beechwood Drive.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene and transported Shawn to Gulf Breeze Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the van was taken to the Sacred Heart freestanding ER in Navarre and was later released after being treated for minor injuries.
Shawn Smith was a well-known and well-loved member of the Gulf Breeze community. Friends and family describe him as a compassionate, dependable, and warm-hearted man — someone who never hesitated to lend a hand or share a kind word.
