FORT MCCOY, Fla. — Tragedy Strikes as 27-Year-Old Motorcyclist from Citra Killed in Friday Evening Crash

A cloud of sorrow has settled over the tight-knit community of Citra and the greater Marion County area following a devastating crash Friday evening that claimed the life of 27-year-old Zack Compton, a local resident known for his adventurous spirit and generous heart. The fatal collision occurred near the intersection of Northeast 175th Street and Northeast 110th Avenue Road in Fort McCoy, prompting a swift response from emergency personnel and law enforcement.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the accident happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. when Compton, who was riding his motorcycle eastbound on NE 175th Street, collided with a sedan traveling southbound on NE 110th Avenue Road. Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the sedan, who has not been publicly identified, entered the intersection, reportedly failing to yield the right of way. The impact of the crash was severe, and despite immediate life-saving efforts at the scene, Compton was pronounced dead.

Eyewitnesses described the harrowing scene, with several residents rushing out of nearby homes after hearing the crash. “It sounded like an explosion,” said one local. “I knew immediately it was bad.” Others recalled seeing bystanders attempting CPR on the young man before paramedics arrived, but the injuries were too extensive.

Zack Compton was a well-known figure in the Citra community. A graduate of North Marion High School, he worked as a mechanic and was widely admired for his deep knowledge of motorcycles and his willingness to help others with their vehicles. Friends describe Zack as someone who lived life with passion and authenticity. Whether he was riding through scenic backroads or lending a hand at a local charity ride, his presence was always felt — full of energy, laughter, and kindness.

“He was one of those people you just never forget,” said longtime friend Justin Hartley. “Zack had a heart of gold. He loved his family, his friends, and his bike. Riding was his therapy, his peace.”

The loss has sent ripples through local social media channels, where tributes have poured in from friends, family, and even strangers touched by his story. Many are using the hashtag #RideForZack to share photos, stories, and condolences. A candlelight vigil is being planned for later this week near the site of the crash to honor his memory.

Authorities say the driver of the sedan remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. At this time, no charges have been filed, but the incident remains under active review. FHP has urged drivers to exercise caution, especially at intersections where motorcycles can be harder to see.

Motorcycle safety advocates have also weighed in on the tragedy, highlighting the importance of both motorcyclists and drivers being vigilant and respectful of each other on the roads. “One mistake, one glance away, and lives are changed forever,” said Brian Walsh of Florida Bikers United. “Zack’s death is a painful reminder of how fragile life is.”

Zack Compton is survived by his parents, siblings, and a wide circle of friends and loved ones who are now left to grapple with a sudden and painful void. His family has requested privacy during this time of mourning but issued a short statement: “Zack was the light in our lives. He lived fast, he loved deeply, and he left us far too soon.”

A memorial fund has been established to assist the Compton family with funeral expenses, and local motorcycle groups are organizing a tribute ride in the coming days — a final journey through the roads he once loved so much.

As the sun sets over Citra and Fort McCoy, the roar of motorcycle engines may echo a little more solemnly, each one a tribute to a life taken too soon — a life that will not be forgotten.
