A tragic incident unfolded in the heart of Southend-on-Sea, where a beautiful, sunny day in the park quickly turned into a nightmare. On Saturday, June 28, 2025, a tree collapsed at Chalkwell Park, striking and injuring several children. Among them, a seven-year-old girl tragically lost her life, while a six-year-old girl remains critically injured. The events of that fateful afternoon have left the community in deep sorrow, mourning the loss of a young life and grappling with the profound shock of the incident.

The tree, which had stood proudly in the park for many years, had been propped up with metal braces for support. However, on that day, it suddenly gave way, causing the large boughs to fall, crushing the children beneath its weight. Witnesses who were nearby described a scene of utter chaos as people rushed to help the victims.

Ishan Madan, 39, who was playing cricket nearby, was one of the first to respond. He recounted the horrifying moment when the tree collapsed, saying that it was only after hearing a scream that he and others rushed to the scene. “So we got bystanders to help, it must have been 40 to 50 people who then tried to lift the fallen tree up and to our horror, these two little girls, poor girls, were stuck underneath it,” he recalled. “Their mother was on the corner. It was horrendous.”

The bravery of the bystanders, who worked frantically to free the children, cannot be overstated. It was a heartbreaking scene, and despite the efforts of everyone present, the young girl succumbed to her injuries after being transported to the hospital. The other child, a six-year-old girl, is in critical condition, and her family anxiously waits for updates on her recovery.

Police and emergency responders arrived swiftly at the scene, and two air ambulances were called to transport the injured children to nearby hospitals. The immediate response by first responders was commendable, and their dedication ensured that the injured children received the care they desperately needed. However, despite their efforts, the young girl tragically passed away at the hospital later that evening.

The local community, shaken by the tragic event, has come together to mourn the loss and offer support to the grieving families. Flowers, soft toys, and heartfelt tributes have been left at the park, and the outpouring of love and sympathy from residents has been overwhelming. It’s clear that this tragedy has touched the hearts of the entire community.

Local authorities, including the Southend-on-Sea City Council, have expressed their deepest condolences to the families affected by this devastating event. Daniel Cowan, the leader of Southend-on-Sea City Council, issued a statement acknowledging the tragedy, saying, “The death of a child is devastating, and my deepest, most heartfelt condolences are with the child’s family and friends. My thoughts are also with the injured children and those on the scene. I hope the other children make a full and speedy recovery.”

In the aftermath of the incident, questions have been raised about the safety of the tree and whether enough precautions were taken to ensure the public’s safety. The tree had been supported by metal braces, and many residents have stated that they had noticed the tree’s precarious condition in the past. Some local residents who have been visiting the park for years remarked that they had seen the tree’s boughs supported by metal props but never imagined it would pose a danger.

Steve Ives, a 68-year-old local resident, expressed his shock and disbelief at the tragedy, commenting, “The park is busy all the time with people taking their dogs out and families having picnics. It’s fantastically maintained by the council. The tree has been propped up by the metal props ever since I can remember. The boughs are just so huge. It always looked healthy and people stood under it and chatted. It’s such an awful thing to happen.”

The Southend-on-Sea City Council has assured the public that a full investigation will take place to determine the exact cause of the incident and to ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again. The investigation will likely look into the structural integrity of the tree and whether the braces that had been placed on the tree were adequate.

In the meantime, the focus remains on the children who were injured and the families who are coping with this unimaginable loss. The local community has shown incredible strength and unity during this difficult time, with many people offering their support to those affected. Community leaders have also encouraged residents to seek counseling and support if they are struggling to cope with the emotional aftermath of the incident.

David Burton-Sampson, the Member of Parliament for Southend West and Leigh, also expressed his shock and sadness, saying, “This news is truly devastating. I am sure I reflect the thoughts of all our residents here in Southend in sending my deepest condolences to the child’s family and friends.”

As the investigation continues, residents and officials alike are focused on ensuring the safety of public spaces and preventing future accidents. The tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the importance of vigilance in maintaining the safety of public parks and recreational spaces, especially when they are frequented by families and children.

In addition to the emotional toll, the tragedy has raised important discussions about park safety, tree management, and how local governments can take proactive measures to prevent such incidents in the future. As the community reflects on the loss of a young life, there is a growing sense of urgency to address these concerns and make public spaces safer for everyone.

While the loss is irreparable, the collective grief has brought the Southend-on-Sea community closer together. Neighbors have supported one another, and there is a shared sense of loss, but also a shared determination to honor the memory of the child who lost their life and the others who are still fighting for their recovery.

As we mourn, we also vow to carry forward the love and support that was shown to the families affected by this tragedy. The memory of this young girl will remain in the hearts of all who knew her, and the community will continue to offer prayers, support, and condolences as the healing process begins.

May the child who tragically lost their life rest in peace, and may their memory serve as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. As the investigation unfolds, we hope that lessons are learned, and steps are taken to ensure that public spaces remain safe for all who visit them.
