The La Porte community is enveloped in sorrow as it comes to terms with the passing of Richard Watson, a cherished local musician, dedicated educator, and treasured friend, who departed this life on June 30, 2025. Richard’s sudden passing has cast a somber shadow across the city and beyond, touching the hearts of all who knew him. He was 68.

Richard Watson was more than just a gifted musician; he was a cornerstone of the La Porte cultural and educational landscape. With a career that spanned over four decades, Richard devoted his life to inspiring others through the universal language of music. As a teacher, mentor, performer, and advocate for the arts, he helped shape generations of young musicians and enriched the lives of countless community members.

Born and raised in La Porte, Richard’s roots in the community ran deep. A proud graduate of La Porte High School, he pursued higher education in music performance and education, earning degrees from Indiana University and later returning to his hometown to share his knowledge and passion. Whether leading the school band, directing a local choir, or performing on stage with his jazz ensemble, Richard’s brilliance was evident to all who had the privilege of witnessing his talent and commitment.

For over 30 years, Richard taught music in the La Porte Community School Corporation. In that time, he became a guiding light to countless students, many of whom credit him with instilling a love for music and the discipline to pursue their dreams. His music room was a place of energy, creativity, and encouragement — a safe space where students could express themselves, grow, and discover who they were.

Outside the classroom, Richard was a fixture in the local arts scene. He played regularly with various jazz and classical ensembles, served on the board of the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra, and was often seen volunteering his time at community events, benefit concerts, and youth music camps. His performances were known for their warmth, emotion, and technical brilliance — a reflection of the soul behind the sound.

Yet, perhaps Richard’s greatest legacy lies in the relationships he built. Known for his quick wit, unwavering kindness, and infectious laughter, he had a way of making everyone feel valued. Former students describe him as a life-changer, someone who saw potential where others might not, and nurtured it with patience and belief. Friends speak of his loyalty, his humility despite his many achievements, and his ability to bring joy even in the hardest times.

Richard’s absence is deeply felt by his beloved wife of 42 years, Marianne Watson, their three children — Benjamin, Claire, and Samuel — and five grandchildren who adored their “Grandpa Richie.” His family was the center of his world, and he often spoke of them with immense pride and love.

Also mourning his loss are hundreds of former students, fellow musicians, and community members who were touched by his presence. In honor of Richard’s life and legacy, a public celebration will be held at the La Porte Civic Auditorium on Saturday, July 6, where friends, family, and students will gather to share memories and perform some of Richard’s favorite musical pieces. In lieu of flowers, the Watson family has requested that donations be made to the Richard Watson Music Scholarship Fund, established to support aspiring musicians in the La Porte area.

As the final notes of Richard Watson’s life fade into memory, his song continues in the hearts and harmonies of those he taught, mentored, and loved. His was a life well-lived, full of passion, service, and humanity. Though he may no longer walk among us, the music he inspired — in sound, spirit, and soul — will echo in La Porte and beyond for generations to come.

Rest in peace, Mr. Watson. Your melody lives on.
