A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the Brooklyn community after 42-year-old Pascual Tziquin was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while crossing the street with his son on June 22, 2025. The devastating incident, which took place in the early morning hours in the Bensonhurst neighborhood, has left his family and the local community in profound grief.

    What Happened

The fatal crash occurred just after 3:20 a.m. at the intersection of New Utrecht Ave. and 72nd St. in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. Pascual Tziquin, who was crossing the street with his 22-year-old son, Henry Tziquin, was hit by a red Dodge Charger that was speeding through the neighborhood. The force of the collision was so intense that Pascual’s cellphone ended up embedded in the car’s grill. Despite the heroic efforts of emergency responders, Pascual, who suffered a massive head injury, was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center, where he was placed on life support. Tragically, after a week of fighting for his life, Pascual passed away on June 29, 2025.

Henry, who was a few steps ahead of his father at the time, witnessed the horrific aftermath. “I turned around and saw my dad on the ground. His eyes were closed. I was scared… I didn’t know what to do,” Henry recalled, struggling to come to terms with the sight of his father lying lifeless.

The driver of the stolen Camaro, 21-year-old Christian Gonzalez, fled the scene but was apprehended by police several blocks away. Gonzalez was initially charged with leaving the scene of an accident without reporting it, but those charges are expected to be upgraded now that Pascual has passed away. The circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation, and further legal actions are expected.

    Who Was Pascual Tziquin

Pascual Tziquin was a hardworking father and husband who had immigrated to the United States from Guatemala two years ago with hopes of building a better life for his family. A restaurant worker by trade, Pascual was known for his dedication to his work and his unwavering commitment to supporting his loved ones. Along with his son, Henry, Pascual sent money back home to relatives in Guatemala, ensuring that they could improve their lives as well.

His son Henry described him as a “good man” who worked tirelessly to provide for his family and who sometimes enjoyed spending time with friends. “We’re looking for a better life in this country. That’s why we work hard. We’re not looking for problems,” Henry shared. Pascual’s life was a testament to the American dream, and he was widely respected by his friends and coworkers for his warm nature and commitment to his community.

    Public or Family Reaction

The loss of Pascual has left a deep void in the hearts of his family, who have been left struggling to cope with this sudden tragedy. Henry, who had been by his father’s bedside throughout the week while Pascual remained in a coma, expressed the emotional toll of losing his dad. “Losing your dad’s not easy. Your dad’s your dad,” he said. “My mom’s crying. My brothers are crying. I don’t know what I’m going to do now.”

The Brooklyn community has rallied around the Tziquin family, offering condolences and support during this difficult time. A memorial is growing at the site of the crash, with friends, neighbors, and strangers alike leaving flowers, candles, and heartfelt tributes to Pascual. Local residents have expressed their outrage over the senseless loss, and many have called for justice to be served for this tragic incident.

    Official Statement

The New York Police Department has issued a statement confirming the arrest of Christian Gonzalez, who is currently in custody. According to police, Gonzalez was apprehended approximately seven blocks from the crash site. The police are continuing their investigation into the cause of the accident, and toxicology reports are pending to determine if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

Henry Tziquin is also calling for financial accountability in the wake of his father’s death, as he seeks to raise funds for a proper burial in Guatemala. He has expressed his desire for the driver to be held liable, hoping that justice will be served for the senseless loss of his father.

Dr. William Edwards, a community leader in Bensonhurst, expressed his condolences, saying, “This is a tragedy that should never have happened. It’s heartbreaking to see a family suffer so deeply, and we stand with them as they seek justice for Pascual.”

    Closing

The untimely death of Pascual Tziquin has shaken the Brooklyn community and serves as a reminder of the dangers of reckless driving. His family, especially his son Henry, are left to mourn the loss of a beloved father, son, and husband who had so much more to give. Pascual’s memory will live on through the stories of kindness, resilience, and love that he left behind.

As the investigation continues and the community rallies around the Tziquin family, we hope for justice and healing in the wake of this heartbreaking loss.
