Vincent (“Vinny”) Villella Obituary, Death: The town of Riverhead and the greater Wading River community mourn the passing of Vincent “Vinny” Villella, former Town Supervisor, veteran public servant, devoted husband, and lifelong local, who died peacefully on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at the age of 78.
Vinny’s life reflected a deep and lasting commitment to his hometown. Born and raised in Riverhead, he graduated from Riverhead High School in 1965, served honorably in the U.S. Army, and later worked in his family’s beloved store, *Villella Shoes on East Main Street, which remained a local staple until its closing in 1998. His early years shaped a man known for his integrity, diligence, and unwavering connection to the people around him.
In 1997, Vinny took an unexpected but defining leap into public service, leading a fusion ticket under the newly formed Riverhead Party—with backing from the Democratic Party—and achieved a remarkable victory over the incumbent Supervisor, Jim Stark. As Supervisor from 1998 to 1999, Vinny and his running mates, Phil Cardinale and Christopher Kent, held the Town Board majority, steering Riverhead through a period of dynamic civic engagement and spirited leadership.
Though his re-election bid in 1999 was unsuccessful, Vinny’s dedication never wavered. He later joined the Democratic Party and served as Chairman of the Riverhead Town Democratic Committee from 2010 to 2012, exemplifying his belief in unity, dialogue, and progress. After his time in elected office, he continued his service with the Suffolk County Board of Elections until his retirement.
Known for his warmth, wit, and deep knowledge of his town’s history and character, Vinny was more than a public figure—he was a neighbor, mentor, and friend. His passing leaves a tremendous void across Riverhead and Wading River, where his legacy of bipartisan cooperation and hometown pride lives on. Vinny is survived by his loving wife Ellen, his children Aimeee Villella McBride and Jason Villella, and extended family and friends who will remember him fondly and with great admiration.
