A tragic shooting occurred on the morning of July 28, 2025, at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada, leaving three individuals dead and several others injured. Authorities have arrested Dakota Hawver, the 26-year-old suspect, after a gunfight with police.

     What Happened
Around 7:25–7:30 a.m., Dakota Hawver began shooting near the valet area of the Grand Sierra Resort, firing approximately 80 rounds before fleeing to the parking lot. He fatally shot one more victim before engaging in a gunfight with a security guard and later Reno police. Hawver was shot and taken into critical care.

    Who Were the Victims
Three victims tragically lost their lives:

    • Justin Aguila, 33, from Southern California, was in Reno for a bachelor party.
    • Andrew Canepa, 33, also from Southern California, co-owned Side Street Café in Newbury Park.
    • Angel Martinez, 66, a longtime Reno resident known for his work in local restaurants and casinos.
Additionally, three others were injured, two critically.

    Who Was Dakota Hawver
Dakota Hawver, a 26-year-old Reno resident, has no prior criminal record or mental health conditions. He legally purchased the weapon involved in the shooting, a 9 mm handgun, two years prior. As of now, no connection between Hawver and any of the victims or the Grand Sierra Resort has been identified. His motive remains unclear.

     Sequence of Events
The shooting began near the valet area, where Hawver initially encountered a malfunction before continuing the attack. He fled to the parking lot, shooting a third victim before being confronted by a casino security guard. Reno police arrived minutes later, engaged in a gunfight, and apprehended Hawver. He remains hospitalized.

     Community Response and Aftermath
Reno and Sparks officials have expressed deep grief, and the community has rallied in support of the victims’ families. Candlelight vigils have been held, and there are growing calls for increased awareness of gun violence. Local law enforcement agencies are continuing the investigation, and memorials for the victims have been organized.

     What Happens Next
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the motive behind the tragic attack. The Reno and Sparks communities are in mourning, but they are coming together to honor the victims and stand united against gun violence.

    Closing:
While the loss is immeasurable, the memories of the victims will live on in the hearts of their families and the community. The investigation into this tragic shooting is ongoing, with authorities determined to uncover more details and ensure justice for the victims.

Rest in peace to Justin Aguila, Andrew Canepa, and Angel Martinez. Your legacies will live on in the hearts of all who knew you.
