A tragic boating crash on the Colorado River has claimed the life of Weston Stewart, a father of two, and has led to criminal charges against San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bruce Southworth. The incident, which occurred south of the Needles Bridge, is under investigation.

    What Happened
On Friday evening, around 5:30 p.m., a fatal boating collision occurred on the Colorado River near the California-Arizona border. Weston Stewart, 38, was aboard an 18-foot Sanger boat that was adrift when it was struck by a larger 22-foot Cheetah deck boat operated by Sgt. Bruce Southworth, an off-duty member of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. Emergency crews performed CPR at the scene, and Stewart was transported to Colorado River Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

    Who Is Weston Stewart?
Weston Stewart, 38, of La Verne, California, was a father of two young boys and a beloved family member. Remembered for his big heart and fun-loving spirit, Stewart’s passing has left a profound impact on his family and friends. A GoFundMe page has been set up for his family, where tributes describe him as a devoted husband and father with deep connections to those around him.

    Background or Timeline
The crash took place just south of the Needles Bridge on the Colorado River. According to officials, Stewart’s boat was adrift when it was struck by the larger vessel operated by Sgt. Southworth. The Sheriff’s Department confirmed that alcohol was believed to be a factor in the crash. Southworth was arrested at the scene on suspicion of negligent operation of a watercraft while intoxicated, which is a felony under California’s Harbors and Navigation Code. He was later released on bond. Southworth, who previously received the Presidential Medal of Valor in 2018 for his heroics during the 2015 San Bernardino mass shooting, is now on administrative leave pending the investigation’s outcome.

    Public or Social Media Reaction
The tragic incident has sparked widespread grief, particularly among family, friends, and the community of La Verne. Many took to social media to share memories of Weston Stewart, emphasizing his warm personality and loving nature. The GoFundMe page set up for his family has received an outpouring of support as the community rallies to assist them in their time of loss.

Official Statement or What Happens Next
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the ongoing investigation into the incident. Sgt. Southworth remains on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, with authorities urging anyone with information about the crash to come forward. Deputies are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and the role alcohol may have played in the incident.
