The maritime community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Thomas “Tommy” Hargrave, a dedicated shipwreck enthusiast, who tragically passed away on July 25, 2025, while pursuing the very history he cherished. The 48-year-old, a beloved figure in the East Coast shipwreck diving community, died while on an expedition in the unforgiving waters of George’s Bank, a region known for both its rich maritime history and its peril.

    What Happened

Tommy Hargrave, a resident of Toms River, New Jersey, was on a week-long deep-sea diving mission aboard a chartered research vessel when tragedy struck. The crew was investigating the site of a lost fishing trawler believed to have vanished in the mid-1900s. Hargrave had been leading the expedition with his usual enthusiasm, and the dive had been going smoothly until he signaled distress during the ascent. Despite the crew’s swift response—administering CPR and deploying emergency oxygen—Hargrave could not be revived. It is believed he suffered a sudden cardiac event while surfacing, a danger often present in deep-sea exploration due to the high-pressure, cold environments of the Atlantic.

    Who Was Tommy Hargrave?

Tommy Hargrave was a man whose passion for maritime history and shipwreck exploration defined much of his life. Known for his meticulous research and dedication to preserving the stories of long-lost vessels, Hargrave became a respected figure in the shipwreck diving community. His ability to bring life to the history of shipwrecks made him a beloved member of the maritime preservation world.

Hargrave was described by his peers as someone who “lit up whenever he talked about a shipwreck.” His friend and fellow diver, Alex Marino, fondly remembered him, saying, “Tommy didn’t just dive wrecks—he honored them. To him, every ship was a story, every dive a tribute to the men and women who lived, worked, and sometimes died at sea. He always reminded us that we weren’t just treasure hunters. We were stewards of history.”

    Legacy and Remembrance

Tommy’s sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community of wreck divers, maritime historians, and all those who knew him. His dedication to uncovering the history of the sea, his generosity with his knowledge, and his unshakable spirit of adventure left an indelible mark on everyone he met. His family, including his wife Caroline and children Ella and Sam, have expressed their gratitude for the crew’s efforts to save him and have found comfort in knowing that Tommy died doing what he loved.

“He died doing what he loved, and we find comfort in knowing that his final moments were spent beneath the waves he held so dear,” his family said in a statement. “Tommy believed the ocean tells the stories of our past, and now he has become part of it.”

    Memorial Service and Tributes

A memorial service will be held in New Jersey to celebrate Tommy’s life. In addition, a maritime tribute will take place in New Bedford, Massachusetts, where his final return was made. Friends and colleagues are also organizing a commemorative dive later this year to honor Hargrave’s memory, during which a plaque will be placed on one of the wrecks he helped document—a fitting tribute for a man who dedicated his life to preserving the silent voices of the sea.

As the Atlantic tides continue to wash over the wrecks of old, Tommy Hargrave’s memory will live on—through the histories he uncovered, the dives he led, and the lives he touched with his passion for the deep.
