In Loving Memory of John K. Dezan: A Pillar of Our Community

It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we share the devastating news of the passing of John K. Dezan, a beloved member of our modeling and miniature community, and a cornerstone of the Sprue group. John left us this morning, and his loss reverberates deeply among those who had the honor of knowing him—both personally and through the shared passion we all hold for the hobby that brought us together.

    Who Was John K. Dezan?

John wasn’t just a hobbyist—he was the kind of person who elevated the entire community simply by being part of it. Whether it was offering a word of encouragement to a beginner struggling with their first build, sharing detailed knowledge about obscure model kits and painting techniques, or simply showing up to engage, support, and connect, John brought a quiet generosity and an unmistakable spark of joy to everything he did. He was the embodiment of patience, kindness, and humility—traits that made him not only a respected figure in our hobby but a dear friend to many.

His contributions to Sprue went far beyond the models he assembled or the posts he shared. John was a mentor, a motivator, and a voice of reason and inspiration. He had a gift for making others feel welcome, for lifting people up, and for turning even the most technical of topics into something accessible and enjoyable. His enthusiasm was infectious, his advice always thoughtful, and his presence truly grounding.

    John’s Legacy

But more than his deep knowledge or talent, it was John’s heart that set him apart. He genuinely cared about people. He made time for conversations, offered help without being asked, and celebrated others’ successes with genuine joy. Many of us knew him not only as a modeler but as a friend—one who remembered the small details, checked in during hard times, and celebrated every small victory like it was a big one.

For many of us, Sprue will never feel the same again without John. The conversations will be a little quieter, the inside jokes a bit more hollow, and the sense of camaraderie missing a key piece. His absence will be deeply felt in every discussion thread, build log, and community project he once so passionately supported.

    A Tribute to John

As we process this heartbreaking loss, we invite everyone who knew John to share their memories, photos, or even just a kind word. Let us remember him not only for what he built with his hands but for the community he helped build with his heart.

To John K. Dezan—thank you. Thank you for your spirit, your guidance, your humor, and your friendship. You made this community better simply by being in it. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

May you rest peacefully, John. The sprue clippers are silent today, but your legacy lives on in every build you inspired.
